Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Gold

Two months later, the twins were strong enough to come home.
We didn't return to the city apartment. My grandfather had moved us to the Sterling Estate in Connecticut—a massive, sprawling sanctuary built into the side of a coastal cliff. It was a place of high security, deep history, and total privacy.
My recovery was slow but steady. The hemorrhage had left its marks, but the stress was vanishing, replaced by the daily, sacred ritual of caring for two babies who were becoming stronger by the hour.
I spent my mornings in the glass-walled nursery, looking out over the Atlantic Ocean, while my grandfather managed the dismantling of the remnants of Weston’s life from his study downstairs.
"He’s pleading guilty to the fraud charges today," my grandfather said, walking into the nursery one afternoon. He was holding a file, but he set it down on the changing table to reach for Quinn. He held her with a practiced, gentle grace that only a man who had raised an empire could possess. "He’s trying to negotiate a lighter sentence by naming his accomplices."
"Does he have anyone else to name?" I asked, smoothing Sawyer’s blanket.
"He’s naming his own father, his business partners, and everyone he ever manipulated to get ahead," my grandfather chuckled. "The man is a coward, Jade. He thinks that by throwing everyone else to the wolves, he can crawl out of the cage."
"Will it work?"
"No," my grandfather said, his eyes turning cold. "I’ve ensured that the prosecution has everything they need to secure the maximum sentence. He’ll be in a cell for a long time. It’s the safest place for him."
I looked at my grandfather—a man who had been a myth in my life for so long. He was the one who had insisted I keep my inheritance a secret, the one who had waited patiently from the shadows while I navigated my own life, waiting for me to realize that people reveal their true character only when they think you have nothing left.
"Why didn't you step in earlier?" I asked. "When he was manipulating the trust funds? When he was treating me like an obstacle?"
May you like
"Because," he said, handing Quinn back to me, "you needed to know who you were when you had nothing. If I had stepped in while you were blinded by his 'love,' you would have resented me. You would have believed that he was the victim. Now, you know the truth of the world. And that is the greatest inheritance I could ever give you."
I held my children, feeling the absolute safety of the walls around us. I wasn't the helpless orphan anymore. I was a Sterling, and the world was finally aligned in my favor.
