Chapter 8 - The Legacy

Two years later, the Sterling Foundation’s health center was officially opened.
It was a beautiful building, designed with the same care and vision I had used to rebuild my own life. I stood on the podium, holding Quinn’s hand while Sawyer sat in his grandfather’s lap in the front row.
"We build for the future," I said, addressing the crowd. "We build so that no one can ever tell us that we are 'nothing.' We build so that our children know that their history is not defined by those who hurt them, but by the love and strength they cultivate in the face of adversity."

My grandfather stood up and walked to the podium. He took the microphone, his voice still strong, still commanding. "My granddaughter has shown me that the Sterling legacy was never about the banks or the ships or the stock market. It was about the ability to see the world as it is, and then to have the courage to make it better."
I looked at the children, playing at the base of the podium, oblivious to the fact that their existence was the reason for all of this.
