Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Contract

The heavy bullet tore through the reinforced glass, leaving a web of spiderweb fractures around a neat, deadly hole. The shot lodged directly into the mahogany headboard six inches above my head.

Before the glass could even hit the carpet, Adrien moved with supernatural speed. He threw himself across the bed, pinning me beneath his broad chest as three more rounds punched through the room, chewing into the walls and leather armchair. His hand cupped the back of my head, holding me tight against his shoulder. His scent—cedar, rain, and cold iron—flooded my senses, blotting out the violent chaos outside.

"Stay down!" Adrien roared into my ear.

The door burst open. Marco, his chief enforcer, sprinted inside, two submachine guns drawn, flanked by four armed guards in dark suits.

"Sniper on the rooftop across 4th Avenue!" Marco yelled over the ringing in my ears. "We’ve got three vehicles pulling into the alleyway! It’s a organized strike, Boss!"

Adeline—no, Lena—my mind scrambled as panic clawed at my throat. My breathing came in shallow, panicked hitches against Adrien’s chest. The bruises on my ribs burned like fire where Marcus had kicked me earlier that night.

Adrien didn't flinch. He didn't blink. With one fluid motion, he snatched the silver-plated pistol concealed beneath the nightstand drawer, slid the photograph into his inner suit pocket, and wrapped his free arm around my waist, lifting me effortlessly off the bed.

"Cover the hall!" Adrien ordered, his voice an absolute command that cut through the thunderous roar of automatic fire echoing from below. "We move to the panic room in the sub-level."

"Adrien... the photograph," I choked out, clutching his dress shirt as he carried me through the shadowy corridor while bullets tore through the drywall behind us. "Who was that woman? Who scratched out her face?!"

"Focus on breathing, Lena," he growled gently, his dark eyes scanning the smoke-filled stairwell as his men returned fire. "You are bleeding again. Let me keep you alive first. We will untangle the dark legacy of your bloodline once I’ve cleared my house of rats."

We descended into the depths of the penthouses, exiting into a heavy steel bunker three floors beneath the foundation of The Velvet Crown. The thick steel doors hissed shut, locking out the frantic gunfire above.

Dr. Bell, an elderly surgeon with sharp eyes and steady hands, was already waiting inside the clean, sterile room with a medical tray.

Adeline set me down gently on the examination table. His jacket was still draped over my shoulders, soaked with my blood and smelling of his expensive cologne. He turned to Dr. Bell. "Fix her ribs. Clean the lacerations on her feet. If she feels a single ounce of unnecessary pain, Bell, I will personally throw you into the Hudson."

"I’ve served the Viscari family for thirty years, Adrien," Dr. Bell replied calmly, snapping on latex gloves. "She’s safe. Now sit down and let me look at your shoulder—you’re bleeding too."

Only then did I notice the dark red stain spreading across the sleeve of Adrien’s white shirt where a glass shard had sliced through his arm during the initial ambush. He ignored it entirely, pulling the crumpled, stained photograph from his inner pocket and flattening it onto the metallic table.

"My mother’s name was Eleanor," I whispered, my voice trembling as Dr. Bell began cleaning the glass splinters from the soles of my barefoot. "Eleanor Vance. She was a schoolteacher. She died in a car accident when I was seven... at least, that’s what my father told me before he drank himself to death."

Adrien stared at the violently scratched-out face in the photograph. Then, with a gloved thumb, he scraped at the edges of the ink covering the woman's collarbone. Beneath the black marker, a faint, distinctive tattoo emerged: a raven coiled around a silver rose.

Adrien’s breath hitched. His jaw clenched so hard the muscles in his neck strained against his collar.

"That isn't Eleanor Vance," Adrien said softly, his voice dropping an octave into something dark and ancient. "That is the mark of the House of Moretti. The syndicate that ruled New York before my father wiped them off the map twenty years ago."

May you like

"Moretti?" I stammered. "I don't... I don't understand. What does a dead mafia family have to do with me? Or Marcus?!"

"Marcus Blake didn't come to your apartment tonight because he was an abusive, jealous boyfriend, Lena," Adrien said, stepping closer and taking my trembling hand into his. "He was hired by the remaining elders of the Commission. You aren't just an orphan. You are Elena Moretti... the last surviving heir to the throne they stole."
