Chapter 7 - The Shadows Cleared

A month after the fateful meeting at the Saint Regis, the city of New York felt completely transformed.
The Falcone family was completely dismantled. The corrupt city officials had been replaced, the Moretti estate in Hudson Valley was undergoing full restoration, and the streets were quiet under the unified rule of the Viscari and Moretti alliance.
It was a crisp autumn evening.
I stood on the glass balcony of Adrien’s penthouse at The Velvet Crown, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater, sipping a warm cup of tea as I watched the sunset paint the Manhattan skyline in brilliant shades of orange, purple, and gold.
Below me, the city was bustling with life. But up here, high above the neon lights, there was only peace.
A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around my waist from behind. Adrien pulled me close against his broad chest, resting his chin on my shoulder, burying his face in the crook of my neck, breathing in my scent.
"You're thinking too hard, little rose," Adrien murmured softly, his hot breath tickling my skin.
"I was just thinking about the night I ran into this building," I confessed, turning slightly in his arms to trace the line of his jaw with my fingers. "I was barefoot. Bleeding. Terrified out of my mind. I thought my life was over."
"And now?" Adrien asked, his grey eyes searching mine with unbridled devotion.
"And now I realize my life was just beginning," I smiled softly. "You saved me, Adrien."
"No, Lena," Adrien corrected gently, taking my hand and pressing it against his chest, right over his beating heart. "You saved me. Before you burst through those doors, I was just a ghost running a syndicate. I had no purpose, no warmth, no light. You gave me a reason to live."
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a tiny velvet box.
My heart skipped a beat.
Adrien dropped down on one knee on the cool stone balcony, looking up at me with an expression of pure, vulnerable adoration that no man in New York had ever seen on his face.
"Elena Moretti," Adrien said, his voice deep and steady. "I have fought wars for this city, but I would burn the entire world to ashes before I ever let anyone hurt you again. Will you do me the absolute honor of becoming my wife? Will you rule beside me forever?"
Tears of pure, overwhelming happiness spilled down my cheeks.

"Yes, Adrien!" I cried softly, throwing my arms around his neck as he stood up. "Yes! A thousand times yes!"
He slid a breathtaking three-carat pear-shaped diamond ring onto my finger—a stone that caught the fading light of the sunset and sparkled like a star. Then he lifted me off my feet, spinning me around on the balcony while our laughter filled the evening air.
