Chapter 2 - The Ghost of the Moretti

The safehouse beneath The Velvet Crown smelled of ozone and fresh antiseptics. While Dr. Bell stitched the long gash on my forearm, Adrien stood near the steel wall, staring at a bank of security monitors displaying the carnage on the streets above.

"The attack was coordinated," Marco reported, wiping grease and blood from his cheek as he stepped into the bunker. "Three SUVs, all registered to dummy corporations owned by the Falcone family. They knew you brought her here, Boss. They knew Marcus failed to secure her quietly."

"Falcone is a dog who only moves when he’s fed meat by bigger men," Adrien replied coldly, staring at the screen where his men were loading captured mercenaries into dark vans. "He wouldn't dare strike my private residence unless the Commission promised him immunity."

I sat up on the examination table, my head spinning from the local anesthetic Dr. Bell had administered. The black velvet jacket Adrien had given me was still wrapped around my shoulders like armor.

"Why Marcus?" I asked, my voice cracking. "I met him two years ago at the law firm where I worked as a paralegal. He courted me for six months. He was gentle... until we moved in together. Then everything changed."

"It changed because two years ago, your father died," Adrien revealed, turning to face me. "While your father was alive, he kept you hidden under a false identity in upstate New York. He paid off city officials to keep your birth certificate buried in a sealed file. But when he died, the paper trail began to rot. Marcus Blake wasn't just a lawyer, Lena. His father owed millions to Don Falcone. Marcus offered to track you down, isolate you, manipulate you, and eventually hand you over to Falcone in exchange for wiping his family’s debts clean."

A cold nauseating wave swept through my gut. Every touch, every sweet word, every sudden burst of violent rage from Marcus over the last two years hadn't been about love or control—it had been a calculated, methodical imprisonment.

"He was going to kill me," I whispered, tears spilling down my cheeks. "Tonight... when he pulled the knife in the kitchen... he said I was worth more dead than alive."

Adrien crossed the room in three long strides. He knelt in front of my chair, brushing his thumb against my cheek, wiping away my tears with a tenderness that contradicted the lethal reputation he bore.

"He will never lay a finger on you again, Lena," Adrien promised, his dark eyes locking onto mine with terrifying intensity. "I spent ten years hunting down the men who murdered the Moretti family because my father believed in honor, not wholesale slaughter of women and children. I thought the bloodline was gone. But you are here."

"What does that mean for me?" I asked, trembling under his gaze. "Am I a trophy? A target?"

"To Falcone and the Commission, you are a threat that could unite the old loyalists and tear down their empire," Adrien said softly. "To me... you are the woman who walked into my house bleeding, seeking sanctuary. And as long as I draw breath, no one touches what is under my protection."

Suddenly, the bunker’s comm system chimed. Marco hit a button on the wall.

"Boss," a guard’s voice echoed over the speaker. "We caught Marcus Blake trying to cross the George Washington Bridge. He had a passport and two million dollars in offshore bearer bonds."

Adrien slowly stood up, smoothing down the front of his vest. The soft tenderness in his eyes vanished, replaced by the terrifying, unyielding frost of the Don of New York.

"Bring him to the sub-basement," Adrien commanded flatly. "It's time Mr. Blake answered for every bruise he left on my guest."
