Chapter 1 - The Weight of Steel and Secrets

The heavy oak door of Penthouse 402 clicked shut, the reverberation echoing through the high-ceilinged suite like the tolling of an iron bell.
For several agonizing seconds, neither woman moved. The suite smelled faintly of expensive sandalwood cologne, bitter copper from the small cut on Thomas’s lip, and the sharp lavender scent of Patricia’s industrial floor cleaner.
Patricia stood with her feet planted wide, her knuckles white around the wet aluminum handle of her mop. Her chest heaved beneath her forest-green Grand Horizon uniform. Sweat stung her eyes, but she refused to blink, her gaze fixed on the mahogany entryway where Thomas had disappeared.
A soft, ragged sob broke the silence.
Melissa collapsed back onto her knees, her hands covering her face, her sandy-blonde hair falling over her shoulders in tangled locks. Her entire body shook with violent, uncontrollable tremors. The light grey bathrobe she wore was damp at the hem from the soapy water sloshing off Patricia’s mop bucket.
Patricia lowered the mop slowly, leaning it against the arm of a velvet armchair. Her years of working as a maid—cleaning up after the careless, wealthy guests who treated the staff like invisible furniture—had given her a keen eye for detail. But nothing in her five years at the Grand Horizon had prepared her for this.
"Ma'am?" Patricia’s voice was softer now, a stark contrast to the firm, unwavering tone she had used against Thomas moments ago. She dropped to her knees beside the trembling woman, maintaining a respectful distance. "Ma'am, are you hurt? Did he hit you anywhere else?"
Melissa shook her head wildly, wiping her nose with the sleeve of her robe. Her mascara was smeared across her cheeks in dark, jagged tracks. "My... my wrist," she choked out, holding up her left hand. The skin around her forearm was already bruising into a deep violet ring where Thomas had grabbed her. "And my head. He... he slammed me against the wall before you came in."
Patricia felt a cold spike of rage boil in her gut. She reached into the wide pocket of her apron, pulled out a clean, folded microfiber cloth, and handed it to Melissa. "Here. Take a deep breath. We need to lock the deadbolt, call security, and get an ambulance."
"No!" Melissa gasped, her hand shooting out to grab Patricia’s forearm. Her grip was surprisingly desperate. "No police! No hotel security! Please, Patricia... you don't understand!"
Patricia frowned, gently easing Melissa’s fingers off her uniform. "Ma'am, he assaulted you. He threatened to kill you. And he has a safe full of foreign passports and stolen cash sitting right there in the corner."
"If you call hotel security, Mr. Sterling will know within three minutes," Melissa whispered, her tear-filled eyes wide with pure panic. She pointed toward the wall-mounted phone near the desk. "Julian Sterling—the hotel’s primary investor—is Thomas’s business partner! Thomas doesn't just use this suite to stay in; he uses it to move money! The front desk, the night managers, even the head of security... they are all on his payroll!"

Patricia’s heart dropped. Mr. Sterling was a terrifying figure at the Grand Horizon—a cold, sharp-eyed billionaire who visited the property once a month. The staff was warned that breathing too loudly near him could get a person fired on the spot.
"If Sterling finds out I’m here," Melissa continued, her voice trembling, "or that you stopped Thomas, neither of us will leave this building alive tonight. Thomas isn't just an embezzler, Patricia... he’s a courier for an international cartel. And I have the ledger."
