Chapter 4 - The Sub-Basement Trap

The concrete steps were steep, cold, and slippery with condensation.

Patricia held Melissa’s arm firmly, guiding her down four flights in pitch darkness, illuminated only by the thin beam of her pocket flashlight. Melissa’s barefoot steps slapped softly against the concrete, her light robe fluttering in the chill draft blowing up from the bottom of the shaft.

"Down here," Patricia whispered as they reached the fourth subterranean level.

She pushed open a heavy steel fire door, stepping out into a vast, cavernous basement lined with giant silver pipes, roaring water boilers, and rows of industrial washing machines that hummed like sleeping beasts.

"The laundry loading dock is fifty yards through that corridor," Patricia pointed toward a set of double doors under a red EXIT sign. "It opens onto the alley behind the hotel where the linen delivery trucks park. My old sedan is parked in the staff lot right across the alley."

Before they could take ten steps across the wet concrete floor, the red EXIT light suddenly flickered and died.

The roaring hum of the washing machines ceased as the emergency circuit breakers tripped, plunging the massive sub-basement into total, suffocating darkness.

A heavy metal door banged open at the far end of the boiler room.

"I know you're down here, Patricia!" Julian Sterling’s deep, cultured, yet chillingly calm voice echoed off the concrete walls. The sound of leather dress shoes clicking deliberately against the stone floor echoed alongside the heavier, tactical boots of two security guards.

"You've been a reliable employee for five years, Patricia," Sterling said, his voice coming from thirty feet away in the darkness. "It’s a shame you decided to interfere in family matters. Hand over the blue book, step away from Melissa, and I will ensure your termination is... quiet. You can go back to your daughter."

Patricia froze. The mention of her fourteen-year-old daughter, Chloe, sent a wave of icy horror down her spine.

"You leave my daughter out of this!" Patricia shouted into the darkness, her voice echoing off the silver pipes.

"Then be a sensible woman," Sterling’s voice moved closer. "You're a maid. You clean up mess; you don't meddle in it. Melissa’s father was a fool who thought he could use law enforcement against us. Look where it got him."

In the dim glow of her small flashlight, Patricia saw the silhouette of a guard moving around the side of a massive copper boiler, cutting off their path to the delivery dock.

"Melissa," Patricia whispered in a tone so low only the younger woman could hear. "Do you see that red lever on the wall behind the second boiler?"

May you like

"Yes," Melissa whispered back, trembling.

"That's the main high-pressure steam release valve for the entire HVAC system," Patricia said, her jaw setting into a hard line. "When I say three, pull it with all your weight."
