Chapter 7 - The Federal Connection

At 7:00 AM, the rising sun cast long, golden rays through the cabin’s pine trees.

A sleek, unmarked black Ford Explorer pulled quietly off the dirt road, stopping near Patricia’s Camry. Two men in crisp dark suits got out, walking up the wooden steps of the cabin porch with cautious, measured movements.

Patricia stood near the door, holding an iron fire poker behind her back, while Melissa stood behind the table holding the ledger.

The lead man, tall with graying temples and sharp gray eyes, knocked twice on the wooden door frame. He pulled a leather credential wallet from his breast pocket, holding it up against the glass window.

"Patricia Miller? Melissa Vance?" the man called out in a clear, authoritative voice. "I'm Federal Prosecutor Marcus Vance. You called my office four hours ago."

Patricia unlocked the heavy deadbolt, opening the door three inches while keeping the fire poker ready. "How do I know you're not working for Sterling?"

Marcus Vance smiled faintly, stepping back to give her space. "Because ten minutes ago, my agents served a federal search warrant on the Grand Horizon Hotel, seized the server rooms, and placed Julian Sterling’s chief financial officer under arrest at his home in Bethesda."

Melissa gasped, taking a step forward. "You... you arrested them?"

"Not all of them yet," Vance said gravely, stepping into the cabin as Patricia lowered the poker. "Julian Sterling and Thomas Vance caught wind of the raid thirty minutes ago. They slipped out of the city in a private helicopter, heading toward their deep-water yacht moored at the private docks in Cape May."

Vance turned to Melissa, his eyes softening with deep professional respect. "Miss Vance, your father was a good man. He came to my office six months ago, but he didn't have enough hard evidence to secure a grand jury indictment. He told me if anything ever happened to him, you would be the one to finish it."

Melissa’s eyes filled with tears, but her jaw remained firm. She stepped forward, picked up the dark blue ledger from the table, and placed it directly into the Federal Prosecutor’s hands.

"Everything is in there, Mr. Vance," Melissa said, her voice ringing with absolute certainty. "The poison receipts, the offshore routing numbers, the names of every judge and commissioner they bought, and the master keys to their shell accounts."

Vance opened the ledger, scanning the pages with rapid, practiced eyes. A cold, victorious smile spread across his face.

"This isn't just an embezzlement case anymore," Vance murmured, looking up at Patricia and Melissa. "This is the complete destruction of an international syndicate. But we have to move now before their yacht clears international waters."
