Chapter 9 - The Reckoning in Room 101

Six months later.
The United States District Court of Eastern Pennsylvania was packed to maximum capacity for the sentencing of Julian Sterling, Thomas Vance, and twenty-four high-ranking associates involved in the Grand Horizon Syndicate.
I sat in the second row of the gallery, flanked by my sister, my daughter Chloe, and Melissa Vance.
Melissa looked vibrant, healthy, and restored. Her sandy-blonde hair was cut into a chic, professional bob, and she wore a tailored navy suit. Over the last six months, with the help of federal auditors, she had successfully recovered over sixty million dollars of her father’s stolen estate, returning millions to ruined client families across the state.
At the defense table, Julian Sterling and Thomas Vance sat in orange prison jumpsuits, their hands bound to heavy leather waist chains. Their legal appeals had been systematically crushed by the overwhelming mountain of digital and physical evidence provided by the ledger.
The Federal Judge, a stern woman with decades of judicial service, slammed her heavy wooden gavel onto the bench, bringing absolute silence to the courtroom.
"Julian Sterling," the judge spoke, her voice echoing clearly off the high marble walls. "For thirty counts of racketeering, federal grand larceny, corporate bribery, and conspiracy to commit murder: you are sentenced to life imprisonment at the ADX Florence maximum-security facility, with zero possibility of parole."
The judge turned her piercing gaze to Thomas.
"Thomas Vance," the judge continued. "For the murder of Arthur Vance, the attempted murder of Melissa Vance, assault with a deadly weapon, and felony embezzlement: you are sentenced to consecutive life sentences without parole."

As the federal marshals pulled both men to their feet to lead them away toward the rear exit doors, Thomas turned his head, his eyes catching Patricia’s in the gallery.
Patricia met his gaze directly. She didn't look away, she didn't flinch, and she showed no trace of fear. She simply raised her chin, watching the man who had tried to destroy her family led away into the dark, permanent shadows of a lifetime in prison.
