Chapter 2 - The First Domino

The rain had turned into a relentless, icy slush by the time Dante Moretti realized the silence in his mansion was not the silence of victory, but the calm before a detonation.

It was midnight. Selena was upstairs, trying on the jewelry Amara had left behind, her light footsteps overhead driving a strange, irritating spike of tension into Dante’s chest. He sat in his study, swirling his bourbon, waiting for the inevitable phone call from Amara. She would realize how cold the world was outside his perimeter. She would realize that an unemployed, pregnant woman had no place in Chicago without the Moretti protection.

Instead, his encrypted satellite phone buzzed against the mahogany desk.

Dante picked it up, expecting his chief security officer.

"Dante." The voice on the other end was frantic, breathing heavy. It was Lorenzo, his head accountant in Zurich. "We have a massive breach."

Dante’s posture went rigid. "Speak clearly, Lorenzo. What breach?"

"The shell holdings under the Aegis Protocol—the accounts holding the syndicate's operational capital for the Midwest operations—they're frozen. All of them."

Dante stood up so fast his leather chair rolled back into the bookshelf. "That’s impossible. Those accounts are secured with a twenty-four-character alphanumeric key known only to me and—"

He stopped dead.

The blood in his veins ran colder than the ice in his glass.

“There are things about my life you’ll never love. But you will never have to wonder whether I love you.”

He remembered the clinic four years ago. The fever. The smell of copper and antiseptic. He remembered whispering the codes to Amara because she was the only human being on earth he trusted never to betray him. He had believed she was too innocent, too pure, too madly in love with him to ever comprehend the power of those numbers.

Dante sprinted out of his study, down the hall, and into the master closet. He kicked aside the designer shoes, shoved the wall panel open, and stared inside the hidden safe.

The black ledger was gone.

"No," Dante muttered, his fingers clawing at the empty metal compartment. "No, no, no."

It wasn't just the money. The ledger contained the real identities of the corrupt judges, police chiefs, and federal agents Dante paid off every month. It contained the exact shipping routes for the syndicate’s legal and illegal cargo across five states. It was the master blue-print of his empire.

A sudden, sharp realization slammed into his chest like a physical blow. Amara hadn't packed her bag today because of his ultimatum. She had planned this. She had known about Selena for weeks. She had let him play the arrogant, dismissive husband, letting him think he was delivering a crushing blow—all while she was standing on his throat.

"Dante?"

He turned around sharply to see Selena standing at the entrance of the closet, wearing one of Amara’s silk robes.

"What's wrong, baby?" Selena asked, taking a step toward him. "You look pale."

Dante stared at her, and for the first time in eight years, the polished, quiet beauty of the woman he had kept in the shadows felt completely suffocating. Amara’s cold, unfaltering grace in her final moments eclipsed Selena entirely.

"Get out," Dante rasped.

Selena blinked, confused. "What?"

"Get out of this room!" Dante roared, slamming his fist against the mahogany wall so hard the wooden panels cracked.

Selena flinched and retreated, but Dante didn't care. He pulled out his personal phone and dialed his chief enforcer, Marco.

"Find her," Dante barked the second Marco answered. "Find Amara right now. Seal the airports, watch the train stations, check every high-end hotel in the city. Bring her back to me. Unharmed—do you hear me? If a single hair on her head is touched, I’ll end you myself. But find her!"

"Boss," Marco’s voice sounded hesitant over the line. "It's not just the wife. We got a problem at the docks. Federal agents just raided Warehouse 4. They knew the exact floor tiles to pull up to find the unregistered shipments. It’s like they had a map."

Dante slammed his eyes shut.

Amara hadn't just left him. She had declared war. And she was using his own legacy as the weapon.
