Chapter 8 - The Plea and the Promise

Two days later, before the jury could even begin deliberations, Dante called an emergency hearing.

Standing before the judge, against the desperate protests of his defense attorneys, Dante spoke into the microphone.

"Your Honor," Dante’s voice was firm, completely stripped of hesitation. "I wish to change my plea to guilty on all counts."

The courtroom erupted into quiet gasps.

"Mr. Moretti," the judge warned, leaning forward over his bench. "Do you understand that a guilty plea on these federal charges carries a mandatory minimum sentence of twenty-five years without the possibility of early parole?"

"I understand, Your Honor," Dante replied, looking over at Amara, who sat in the front row of the gallery, her hand resting on her stomach. "I am guilty of every charge leveled against me by the United States government. And I am guilty of far worse to the people who trusted me."

He stepped away from the podium and turned directly to face Amara.

"Amara," Dante said, his voice raw, echoing through the quiet room. "You were right. About everything. I thought power was keeping people beneath me. I thought love was something I could control and measure out when it was convenient for me."

He swallowed hard, his throat tight with emotion.

"I don't ask for your forgiveness. I don't deserve it. But I thank you. You saved our daughter from my life. You ended the curse of the Moretti name."

Amara looked at him, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. For the first time in six months, she saw the man she had fallen in love with when she was twenty-four years old—the man who cooked pasta at midnight, the man who had held her hand beside her dying mother's bed.

The mob boss was dead. Only the man remained.

"Take him into custody," the judge ordered, rapping his gavel.

As the marshals escorted Dante toward the holding door, Amara stood up.

"Dante," she called out softly.

Dante stopped, turning back to look at her one last time.

"She’s going to know who you were," Amara said softly, a gentle, sorrowful smile touching her lips. "And when she’s old enough... I’ll tell her who you became at the end."

Dante nodded slowly, a profound, peaceful surrender settling over his features. He turned and walked into the shadows of the holding area, the heavy iron door clicking shut behind him.
