Chapter 3 - The Safehouse and the Shadow

Thirty miles outside Chicago, in a heavily wooded estate surrounded by high security fences and iron gates, Amara sat by a crackling fireplace, sipping warm chamomile tea.
The house belonged to Matteo Vance's family—a property long removed from any official property records, completely off the grid.
Matteo walked into the living room, setting down a secure laptop on the table before her.
"The first phase is complete," Matteo said, a rare, genuine smile crossing his rugged, weathered face. "The Zurich freeze threw his primary enforcers into panic. They can't pay the dock workers, they can't pay off the port authorities, and the FBI just seized twenty million dollars worth of his unrecorded inventory at Warehouse 4."
Amara looked into her tea, watching the steam rise. "How is Dante reacting?"
"He’s tearing the city apart looking for you," Matteo replied softly. "Marco’s men are sweeping every district. Dante hasn't slept. My sources inside the estate say he locked himself in his study after throwing his mistress out of the main house."
Amara raised an eyebrow. "He kicked Selena out?"
"Sent her to a secure apartment downtown under heavy guard. Seems the fantasy of his quiet, peaceful second life melted the moment his empire caught fire." Matteo sat down across from her, his expression turning serious. "Amara, you've crippled his finances and knocked out his legal protection. But Dante is a cornered wolf now. He still controls the street soldiers. He still has the guns."
"Dante’s street soldiers only follow him because he pays them, Matteo," Amara said, her voice dropping into a register of cold calculation that would have shocked her former self. "Take away their payroll, and a mafia soldier is just a criminal looking for a new boss."
She set her teacup down and slid a thick Manila folder across the table to Matteo.
"What is this?" Matteo asked, opening it.
"That is the file on the Falcone family in New York," Amara said. "Dante’s primary rivals. For six years, Dante has been quietly encroaching on their territory in the Midwest, keeping them contained through bribery. The Falcones have wanted Dante dead for a decade, but they didn't have the leverage to strike without sparking an all-out syndicate war."
Matteo scanned the documents, his eyes widening. "You're giving the Falcones his supply lines?"
"I'm giving the Falcones a choice," Amara corrected calmly, touching her stomach as her baby gave a light kick. "They can watch Dante fall, or they can help me dismantle him completely. In exchange, they guarantee total protection for me and my daughter, and they recognize you, Matteo, as the new head of the Midwest distribution network."
Matteo looked at the pregnant woman sitting across from him—a woman he had once seen as merely a sweet, gentle civilian caught in the dark web of Dante Moretti’s world.

"You didn't just plan an escape, did you?" Matteo whispered in awe. "You planned a coup."
"Dante told me that power stays, and women adjust," Amara said, her eyes flashing with a dangerous, brilliant light. "I adjusted. Now it's his turn."
