Chapter 4 - The Pressure Cooks

By Monday morning, the city of Chicago felt like a powder keg waiting for a match.
Dante Moretti stood in the grand conference room of his downtown headquarters, staring out at the foggy skyline. Surrounding the long mahogany table were six of his top lieutenants—men who controlled the gambling, the extortion, the trucking unions, and the private security firms.
None of them looked happy.
"The payroll bounced this morning, Dante," brassy, thick-necked lieutenant named Bruno spoke up, pounding a fist on the table. "My guys at the railyards aren't moving a single crate until their cash is in hand. Word on the street is the feds have our entire digital ledger."
"The feds don't have shit!" Dante snapped, his eyes bloodshot, his suit rumpled—a sight none of his men had ever seen before. "It’s a temporary lock on the offshore accounts. A technical glitch. I am resolving it."
"A technical glitch?" Bruno scoffed, leaning back. "Warehouse 4 got raided. Three of our safehouses in Cicero were hit by state troopers before sunrise. Someone is feeding the law our exact coordinates. Someone who knows the inside of your desk better than you do."
The room went dead silent. Everyone knew who had left Dante over the weekend. Everyone knew Amara was gone.
Dante stepped up to Bruno, his hand instinctively reaching under his jacket toward the custom piece tucked in his holster. The raw, terrifying presence that made Dante a legend pulsed through the room, but for the first time, it was frayed by desperation.
"You speak about my wife again, Bruno," Dante whispered, his voice vibrating with violence, "and you won't leave this room on your feet."
"She’s not your wife anymore, Dante," Bruno spat back, refusing to back down. "She’s a liability. And if she’s the one leaking our business to the law or rival families, she needs to be dealt with like any other informant."
In a flash of terrifying speed, Dante pulled his weapon, chambered a round, and pressed the cold steel barrel directly against Bruno’s forehead.
"Say it," Dante hissed, his eyes blazing with a madness that terrified even his loyalists. "Say what you want done to her. Go on."
Bruno froze, sweat immediately breaking out on his forehead. "Dante... calm down..."
"No one touches her!" Dante screamed, his voice echoing off the glass windows. "No one talks about her! Amara is MY responsibility! You find her, you bring her to me alive and untouched, or I will put a bullet in every single one of your heads and burn this entire city to the ground myself!"
The door to the conference room burst open. Marco rushed in, holding a tablet, his face pale as paper.
"Boss," Marco stammered, ignoring the standoff. "You need to see this. Right now."
Dante slowly lowered the gun from Bruno’s forehead, glaring at his lieutenants before taking the tablet from Marco.
On the screen was a live video stream broadcast from a private, encrypted press room. Sitting at a sleek desk, looking regal in a high-necked navy blue maternity dress, was Amara. Beside her sat two senior federal prosecutors and the head of the Chicago FBI field office.

Dante felt the floor drop out beneath his feet.
"Good afternoon," Amara’s soft, unmistakable voice came through the speaker. "My name is Amara Moretti. I am here today to announce that I have officially entered the Witness Protection Program, and I am turning over complete, unredacted records of the Moretti Syndicate's operations to the United States Department of Justice."
