Chapter 2 - Beneath the Mattress

The silence in the nursery grew so absolute that the hum of the electronic security monitors in the hallway sounded like a roaring jet engine.
Adrien Moretti stared at the tiny black object in Sophie’s palm. As a man who controlled half the shipping lanes and financial networks in Europe, he recognized espionage hardware when he saw it. This wasn't a child's toy. It was an advanced, micro-surveillance listening and tracking bug—military-grade, encrypted, and designed to transmit audio streams on a closed-loop frequency.
And it had been stitched inside a child's comfort doll.
"Dominic," Adrien said, his voice dropping an octave into a tone that signaled someone was about to die very, very slowly. "Clear the room. Everyone out. Now."
Elena scrambled backward, scooping Sophie up into her arms and clutching her fiercely against her chest as Dominic ushered the nannies and the trembling pediatrician out into the hallway, slamming the heavy mahogany doors shut.
Only Adrien and Dominic remained inside the expansive, softly lit nursery.
Adrien walked slowly toward Theo’s crib. As he approached, the little boy began to hyperventilate, his small chest heaving as he stared frantically at his father, then down at the mattress.
"It's okay, buddy," Adrien murmured, though his own voice sounded hollow to his ears. He reached out a large, calloused hand, gripping the edge of the handcrafted mahogany frame.
When he lifted the corner of the heavy, hypoallergenic mattress, a sickening wave of revulsion hit him.
taped neatly to the underside of the wooden slats, right where the mattress’s internal springs met the frame, was a flat, palm-sized lithium battery pack wired directly into a cluster of three identical black bugs. Each wire extended upward, weaving invisibly through the weave of the fabric directly above each of the three cribs.
"A multi-channel audio capture array," Dominic whispered, leaning over Adrien’s shoulder. His face was twisted in disbelief. "Boss... these aren't just transmitting sound. They’re recording biometric data. Heart rate, breathing patterns, cortisol spikes... someone has been monitoring the kids' stress responses in real-time."
Adrien’s vision tunneled.
For the past three months, his children had suffered from sudden, inexplicable night terrors. They screamed every night at precisely 2:00 AM. They vomited. They developed an acute aversion to their own bedroom. Adrien had blamed teething, colic, and bad genetics. He had hired the best doctors, rotated twenty different nannies, and spent millions upgrading the estate's security.
And all the while, someone had been sitting in a control room somewhere, deliberately triggering an acoustic frequency designed to cause sensory overload and psychological distress in infants.
"Who has access to the master security grid?" Adrien asked. His voice was terrifyingly calm, the absolute stillness before a category-five hurricane.
"Only three people, Boss," Dominic replied, swallowing hard. "Myself. Head of Domestic Operations Marcus Vance. And your chief legal counsel, Julian Cross."
Julian Cross. His oldest friend. The man who had managed the Moretti family estate trusts for fifteen years.
"Bring me Julian’s digital communications log for the past six months," Adrien ordered, standing up straight. His tall frame cast a long, menacing shadow across the nursery floor. "And bring me Marcus. Alive. I want to know whose hands touched that sewing kit."
As Dominic rushed off to execute the commands, Adrien walked slowly back to the center of the room. He looked down at the battered cloth doll still resting on the floor where Sophie had dropped it.
The tiny metal click he had heard earlier wasn't a mechanical defect in the doll.
It was the activation switch of a remote audio trigger.

Someone hadn't just been listening to his children. Someone had been testing them. Evaluating how much psychological torture three toddlers could endure before their immune systems collapsed.
Adrien clenched his jaw so hard he felt a tooth crack. In that moment, the mafia boss vanished, replaced entirely by an enraged, vengeance-driven father. Whoever had done this would not just be killed. They would pray for the sweet release of death long before Adrien was finished with them.
