Chapter 5 - The Siege of the East Wing

The east wing corridor was a war zone of flashing red emergency lights and billowing artificial smoke. Automated defense shutters had dropped over the stained-glass windows, turning the hallway into a dark, claustrophobic tunnel of reinforced steel.

Adrien sprinted around the corner, his revolver raised, tracking two armed operatives in tactical black gear who were methodically breaching the heavy oak doors of the nursery.

"Freeze!" Adrien roared, opening fire.

Bang! Bang!

The first round shattered the ceramic wall sconce beside the lead operative’s head. The second caught the second operative squarely in the shoulder plate, spinning him around with a heavy thud against the wall.

The remaining operative whirled around, leveling an automatic submachine gun directly at Adrien’s chest.

Before he could pull the trigger, a small, dark shadow dropped silently from the ceiling ventilation grate directly above him.

It was Elena.

In her hands, she wielded a heavy, solid-brass floor candelabra she must have snatched from the landing. With a ferocious, guttural cry, she brought the heavy metal base down squarely across the operative’s helmet with bone-shattering force.

The man collapsed instantly, unconscious.

Adrien rushed forward, grabbing Elena by the shoulders and pulling her behind the reinforced steel doorframe just as a burst of automatic gunfire chewed up the drywall where they had been standing a second earlier.

"Are you insane?" Adrien shouted over the din of the alarms, his eyes wide with a mix of fury and fierce protection. "What are you doing out here? The kids are inside!"

Elena’s face was smeared with soot and sweat, but her eyes burned with a terrifying, professional coldness that Adrien had never seen before—the eyes of a former black-ops engineer who had finally decided to stop running.

"They aren't here for the kids, Adrien," Elena panted, keeping her back pressed against the wall as she reloaded a suppressed pistol she had pulled from her waistband. "They’re here for the neural-mapping algorithm I built into my daughter's toy. The doll wasn't just a bug—it was a master decryption key. And whoever sent these men knows that I hid the core source code inside Sophie’s nursery routines."

Adrien stared at her, processing the staggering depth of the deception. "You knew about the surveillance."

"I knew someone was hunting me," Elena corrected fiercely, her voice cutting through the alarms. "I came to your estate because your security was impenetrable. I thought we’d be safe here. But I didn't realize they had infiltrated your inner circle through Marcus and Julian."

A heavy thud echoed from the end of the corridor. More footsteps—dozens of them—were rapidly approaching from the main stairwell. Dominic and his security detail were pinned down on the lower floors by a heavily armed vanguard strike force.

"We can't hold this wing alone," Adrien said, his mind calculating tactical angles with ruthless precision. "The panic room in the master suite is reinforced with three inches of titanium plating. We have sixty seconds before they blow the nursery doors."

Elena looked back toward the nursery door. Inside, little Sophie could be heard singing a soft, trembling lullaby to calm the crying twins.

"I'm not running anymore, Adrien," Elena said softly, racking the slide of her pistol with a crisp, lethal click. "If we run, they’ll hunt us to the ends of the earth. The only way to protect my children—and yours—is to end this right here, right now."

Adrien looked at her. For the first time since he had built his criminal empire, he didn't see an employee, a subordinate, or a stranger. He saw an equal. A partner in a war for survival.

He reached out, his hand gripping hers tightly around the grip of her pistol.

"Then let's show them what happens when you wake a sleeping beast," Adrien whispered.
