Chapter 6 - The Lion's Den

The reinforced mahogany doors of the nursery splintered into a million jagged splinters as a breaching charge detonated with a concussive roar that shook the entire east wing.

Smoke billowed into the room, obscuring the rows of white cribs.

Through the haze stepped three heavily armored operatives, their tactical helmets glowing with infrared night-vision visors. Their weapons were raised, sweeping the room with cold, mechanical efficiency.

"Target not secured. Sweep the perimeter—"

Crack!

A silenced gunshot from the shadows near the rocking chair caught the lead operative square in the visor, shattering the reinforced glass and dropping him instantly.

The second operative whirled, firing a burst of suppressive fire into the corner, but Adrien Moretti rolled out from beneath a mahogany changing table, his silver revolver barking twice in rapid succession. Both rounds punched through the soft joints of the operative's tactical vest, dropping him to his knees with a choked gasp.

The third operative—evidently the squad leader—retreated toward the shattered doorway, raising an encrypted comm-link to his helmet. "Extraction team alpha is compromised! We need immediate heavy backup in the east wing—"

He didn't get to finish the transmission.

Elena stepped out from behind the doorframe, her pistol pressed firmly against the back of his helmet.

"Tell your employer," Elena whispered, her voice colder than the Seattle winter, "that Elena Rostova is dead. And if they ever send another rat into my children's room, I'll send their ashes back in a matchbox."

With a swift, practiced movement, she pistol-whipped the squad leader across the temple, sending him crashing unconscious onto the plush carpet.

The nursery fell dead silent once again, save for the crackle of the lingering smoke and the soft, frightened whimpers of the twins from inside their cribs.

Adrien stood up, brushing plaster dust from his shoulders. He walked over to Elena, his dark eyes filled with a new, profound respect. He looked past her toward the cribs where Sophie was standing on her tiptoes, peering over the rail to comfort little Nora.

"Dominic will have the perimeter cleared within ten minutes," Adrien said, his voice steady and authoritative. "And by morning, every single shell company, offshore account, and Vanguard operative on this continent will be wiped off the map."

Elena lowered her weapon, letting out a long, shuddering breath as the adrenaline finally began to drain from her system. She looked up at Adrien, her dark eyes searching his face for judgment, or anger, or betrayal.

Instead, she found only absolute, unyielding devotion.

"What about the kids?" Elena asked softly, her voice trembling slightly.

Adrien walked over to Nora’s crib, gently picking up his daughter and holding her securely against his chest while she buried her tear-streaked face in his shoulder. He then reached down, scooped up Theo in his other arm, and nodded toward Elena, who was already lifting Miles and holding Sophie’s small hand in hers.

"They're safe," Adrien said, his voice ringing with absolute finality. "And from this moment on, no one touches them. No one listens to them. No one enters this house without answering to both of us."
