Chapter 10 - The Horizon of the Whole

The sun was setting over the hills of San Miguel de Allende, painting the sky in deep streaks of violet, amber, and brilliant gold. The historic church towers in the distance began to ring their evening bells, the deep, resonant tones drifting across the valley like a blessing.
Diego sat on the patio steps, his hand resting in Elena’s, his mother’s motorized chair parked safely beside them. The green garden hose was gone, replaced by an elegant, automated underground irrigation system that nourished the roses without a single sound.
Teresa looked out at the garden, her hand resting over her granddaughter's small head. She looked at Diego, her eyes full of a deep, unadulterated peace that no courtroom victory could ever fully capture.
"Dieguito," she whispered, her voice steady and warm.

Diego smiled, leaning his head against his wife's shoulder as the stars began to appear over the Mexican horizon.
