Chapter 5 - The Reclaiming of the Stones

Two weeks later, the gates of the Mendoza estate opened once again. The sun was shining brightly, illuminating the vibrant bougainvillea that climbed the high stone walls.

Diego guided the transport van down the driveway. He stepped out, turning to help his mother. Teresa was sitting in a brand-new, motorized wheelchair, her shawl clean and bright, her eyes reflecting the warm, familiar light of her true home.

Arthur, the family's elderly gardener who had been fired by Brenda months ago, stood by the porch, holding a brand-new clay pot filled with white roses—Teresa’s favorite.

"Welcome home, Doña Teresa," Arthur said, his voice breaking with emotion as he bowed his head.

Teresa looked at the patio tiles, which had been scrubbed clean of every trace of that dark afternoon. She reached out her right hand—the side the stroke hadn't completely taken—and touched her son’s arm.

"Dieguito..." she said, her voice slow, deliberate, but perfectly clear. "You... saved... me."

"No, Mamá," Diego said, kneeling beside her and kissing her hand. "The house saved us. It waited for us to bring the truth back."

That evening, as the stars came out over the San Miguel skyline, Diego sat at his father's old wooden desk in the study. The room no longer smelled of Brenda's artificial perfumes; it smelled of old paper, leather, and cedar. He signed the final legal decree restoring one hundred percent of the property titles to Teresa Mendoza. The fortress was hers again.
