Chapter 2 - The Web of Deceit

By 10:00 a.m., St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital was crawling with plainclothes officers and federal agents.

Whitney sat in a private consultation room down the hall from Calvin’s ICU room. Her hands were wrapped around a paper cup of cold black coffee that she hadn't touched. Across the small laminate table sat Special Agent Sarah Lin from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Agent Lin set a thick beige folder between them.

"Whitney, I know you are in unimaginable shock," Agent Lin began, her tone measured and professional yet devoid of coldness. "But we need your help to understand the timeline. When did David tell you he was deploying?"

"In May," Whitney said, her voice raspy. "He showed me his official deployment orders from the Army Reserve. He said he was being sent to a logistics base in Qatar for a nine-month rotation. He even set up a temporary power of attorney so my mother could handle his mail while he was away."

"Did you ever see him in person after May?"

"No," Whitney said, shaking her head. "He sent emails every few weeks. He called twice from a satellite phone line. The connection was always terrible."

Agent Lin opened the beige folder, pulling out three glossy photographs and sliding them across the table.

Whitney looked down. The photographs didn't show Qatar. They showed David—tall, sharp-jawed, wearing dark sunglasses and a linen shirt—standing outside a luxury marina in Panama City. Standing beside him, holding a high-end designer handbag, was her younger sister, Gretchen.

Whitney felt the air get sucked entirely out of her lungs.

"Gretchen?" Whitney choked out, her fingers digging into the edge of the table. "My sister was in Panama with my ex-husband?"

"Not just visiting," Agent Lin said coldly. "David and Gretchen have been running a shell corporation named Valerie Financial LLC out of Panama for the last three years. The primary funding for this corporation came from systematic embezzlement from Marrow Logistics—the very firm you work for in Tucson."

The realization hit Whitney like a freight train.

"My promotion..." Whitney whispered, her eyes widening in horror. "The presentation I gave in Tucson last night..."

"Your boss, Arthur Vance, was set up," Agent Lin explained. "David and Gretchen used your credentials, your office passcodes, and your home IP address to divert six million dollars from Marrow Logistics into their offshore accounts. They needed you out of town last night so they could finalize the last wire transfer from your laptop while you were in Tucson."

Whitney dropped her head into her hands, her body shaking violently. "And Calvin... oh God, Calvin..."

"Calvin accidentally found the secondary server rig hidden inside your mother's shed," Agent Lin revealed softly. "Yesterday afternoon, your mother caught him inside the shed holding a USB drive containing the decryption keys. When he refused to give it to her because he knew he wasn't supposed to touch her things... she locked him inside. And when Gretchen arrived last night to retrieve the drive before fleeing the country..."

Agent Lin didn't need to finish the sentence.

The image of her innocent, six-year-old boy—who loved plastic dinosaurs and hated angry socks—being beaten by his own aunt because he was holding a drive full of stolen money burned through Whitney's soul like liquid acid.

"Where is the drive now?" Whitney asked, lifting her head. Her face was pale, but her eyes had completely changed. The fear was gone. The grief had hardened into something lethal.

"We don't know," Lin admitted. "The crime lab searched the shed, but the drive wasn't on Calvin when the paramedics found him. We suspect he hid it somewhere before Gretchen attacked him."

Whitney stood up slowly, her hands balled into tight fists. "Then I need to go to my mother's house."
