Chapter 5 - The Interrogation

The interrogation wing of the Pima County Federal Building was cold, windowless, and smelled of stale floor wax and ozone.

Whitney sat behind a one-way mirror in a dark observation room alongside Special Agent Lin. On the other side of the thick glass sat Eleanor Gable—Whitney’s mother.

Eleanor was sixty-two years old, her once-immaculate gray hair now wild and tangled, wearing an orange county jumpsuit. Her wrists were chained to a steel loop bolted into the center of the metal table. Yet, despite her position, her face retained a rigid, arrogant sneer.

Across from Eleanor sat Senior Prosecutor Marcus Vance.

"Mrs. Gable," Vance said, opening a thick legal binder. "Your daughter Gretchen and your former son-in-law David Vance have both signed full confession agreements in exchange for avoiding federal treason charges. They have detailed your full involvement in the Marrow Logistics embezzlement scheme over the past forty-eight months."

Eleanor scoffed, turning her head away. "They are fools. Both of them."

"You received eighty thousand dollars for housing the secondary server array in your shed," Vance continued smoothly. "And last night, when your six-year-old grandson caught you accessing the encrypted terminal, you locked him in that shed in ninety-five-degree heat for six hours."

"He was a disruptive little brat," Eleanor said, her voice completely devoid of emotion, exactly as it had sounded over the phone in Tucson. "Just like his mother. Whitney always thought she was better than the rest of us. Going to college, getting that executive job, acting like she was too good for this family. She left Calvin with me because she cared more about her precious corporate presentation than her own child."

Behind the one-way mirror, Agent Lin looked at Whitney, offering a quiet, supportive touch to her shoulder.

Whitney didn't flinch. She watched her mother on the screen with a detachment that surprised even herself. The woman sitting in that orange jumpsuit wasn't a mother. She was a hollow, bitter shell who had used her own family to feed her insatiable jealousy.

"Do you know what happened to Calvin, Eleanor?" Prosecutor Vance asked, leaning forward.

"I don't care," Eleanor spat. "He's Whitney's problem."

Vance pulled a document from his binder. "Calvin woke up twenty minutes ago at St. Jude's Hospital. His cognitive functions are intact. His first words were asking for his mother."

Eleanor’s sneer faltered for a fraction of a second, a flicker of genuine shock crossing her pale eyes.

Vance stood up, closing his binder with a heavy, decisive thud. "Because of your direct actions, Mrs. Gable, the United States Attorney's Office is charging you with federal wire fraud, conspiracy, felony child abuse, and attempted second-degree murder. Given your lack of remorse, we are seeking a sentence of forty-five years without the possibility of parole."

Eleanor’s face went completely white. "Forty-five... I’ll die in prison!"

May you like

"Yes," Vance said coldly, stepping toward the door. "You will."

Whitney turned away from the glass window, looking at Agent Lin. "I'm going to the hospital."
