Chapter 8 - The Verdict

Six months later.

The Pima County Superior Court was packed with journalists, legal observers, and federal agents.

Whitney sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing an elegant navy blue suit, her hair styled neatly, holding hands with Detective Miller, who had become a close, trusted friend and protector over the past months.

At the defense table sat Eleanor Gable, Gretchen Gable, and David Vance. All three wore dark orange prison uniforms, their hands bound by steel waist chains.

Judge Pamela Reeves, a stern, grey-haired magistrate, adjusted her glasses and looked down from her high bench.

"In the matter of the State of Arizona and the United States Federal Government versus Eleanor Gable, Gretchen Gable, and David Vance," Judge Reeves began, her voice echoing clearly off the high mahogany walls. "The court has reviewed the jury’s unanimous guilty verdicts on all twenty-four felony counts."

Judge Reeves looked directly at Eleanor.

"Eleanor Gable, your actions regarding your six-year-old grandson were marked by a degree of callousness, malice, and depravity that this court rarely encounters. To laugh while a child lay dying from injuries inflicted under your roof is an offense against humanity itself."

Judge Reeves slammed her gavel down.

"For felony child abuse, corporate conspiracy, and attempted murder, you are sentenced to forty-eight years at the Perryville Women's Federal Correctional Institution, without the possibility of early release."

Eleanor slumped forward, her face buried in her chained hands, weeping bitterly as federal marshals dragged her toward the side exit.

"Gretchen Gable," Judge Reeves continued, "for your direct participation in the assault on Calvin Gable and corporate wire fraud, you are sentenced to thirty-two years imprisonment."

Gretchen screamed, kicking her legs as marshals pulled her away from the table. "Whitney! Tell them! Whitney, help me!"

Whitney didn't move. She stared straight ahead, her face calm, completely immune to her sister's desperate cries.

"David Vance," Judge Reeves concluded, "for treasonous corporate espionage, child endangerment, and armed assault on law enforcement, you are sentenced to fifty-five years at the Florence Federal Penitentiary."

David looked back at Whitney one last time, his eyes full of hollow defeat, before he was marched out of the courtroom forever.

Judge Reeves struck her gavel one final time. "Court is adjourned."

The gallery erupted into quiet applause. Whitney stood up, shaking hands with Prosecutor Vance and Agent Lin, feeling a profound, absolute weight lift from her shoulders forever.

The law had spoken. The monsters were gone.
