Chapter 6 - The Awakening

The afternoon light filtered softly through the blinds of ICU Room 402, casting warm golden stripes across the light blue walls.
Whitney sat in a vinyl armchair beside the hospital bed, holding Calvin’s tiny, warm hand in both of hers. His dark curls were messy, the bruising on his pale cheek had faded to a soft yellow-green, and his right arm was encased in a bright blue fiberglass cast—a color he had chosen himself ten minutes after waking up.
The door clicked open gently.
Dr. Vance, the lead pediatric surgeon, walked in holding a digital tablet. He offered Whitney a warm, reassuring smile.
"How is our brave little dinosaur hunter doing?" Dr. Vance asked softly.
Calvin, sitting propped up against two oversized pillows, offered a tiny, tired grin. He held his stuffed blue blanket tightly under his chin with his left hand. "My cast is blue like a Velociraptor," he whispered, his voice still a little raspy from the breathing tube he had used earlier.
Dr. Vance checked the monitoring equipment, tapping a few notes onto his tablet. "His internal scans are completely clear, Whitney. The spleen laceration has sealed nicely without needing secondary surgery, and his vitals are stronger than they were this morning. We're moving him out of the ICU to a private pediatric room this evening."
Whitney let out a deep, trembling breath, kissing the back of Calvin’s small hand. "Thank you, Doctor. Thank you for everything."
"He's a tough kid," Dr. Vance said, winking at Calvin before quietly stepping out of the room.
Once the door clicked shut, Calvin looked up at his mother with his large, bright brown eyes—eyes so pure and innocent that Whitney felt her heart ache with a fierce, protective love.
"Mommy?" Calvin whispered.
"Yes, my sweet boy?"
"Did I do good hiding the orange T-Rex drive?"
Whitney felt a fresh wave of tears pool in her eyes, but she smiled through them, leaning down to press her forehead gently against his.
"You were so brave, Calvin," Whitney whispered, her voice choked with emotion. "You saved Mommy. You saved so many people. But you don't ever have to hide anything ever again. You are safe now. I promise you, on my whole life, no one is ever going to hurt you again."
Calvin snuggled closer into her shoulder, his small body relaxing completely against her warmth. "Can we go home soon?"
May you like
"We're going to build a brand new home," Whitney promised, wrapping her arms around him with extreme gentleness. "Just you and me. Somewhere with a huge yard, no sheds, and as many angry socks as you want to wear."
Calvin giggled softly, a sound that completely erased the terrible laughter of Eleanor Gable from Whitney's mind forever.
