Chapter 10 - The Light of Sunday

Two years later.

The sun shone brightly through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Sterling penthouse. The sound of laughter echoed from the kitchen, where Ethan, now eleven, was attempts to flip pancakes, sending one splatting onto the ceiling.

"Ethan!" William laughed, catching the next pancake on a plate. "That's not how we do it!"

Emma sat at the dining table, surrounded by legal briefs and foundation reports. She had officially graduated with her degree in Child Advocacy, and her foundation had already helped over five hundred children in the New York area.

She looked at William and Ethan, her heart swelling with peace. The shadows of the dark basement, the cold fear of the hidden wall, and the nightmare of Isabella were gone, replaced by a warmth that felt permanent.

William walked over to Emma, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. Over the past two years, their friendship had slowly, naturally grown into something deeper. There were no rush, no dramatic declarations—just a steady, profound bond built on mutual respect, trust, and shared healing.

"Are you ready for the opening of the new shelter tomorrow, Director Torres?" William asked, his eyes crinkling with affection.

"Always, Mr. Sterling," Emma teased, looking up at him.

William smiled, leaning down to kiss her temple. "I love you, Emma."

"I love you too, William," Emma replied, her hand finding his.

Ethan ran over, squeezing himself between them in a giant group hug. "Group hug! And Emma, you have to promise to help me clean the pancake off the ceiling before we leave!"

Emma laughed, holding her new family close. The secret behind the wall had almost destroyed them, but in the end, it had brought them exactly where they belonged: together, in the light.
