Chapter 8 - The Road to Healing

Three weeks passed.
The Sterling mansion was closed for extensive renovations, and William had moved Ethan and himself to a private, secure penthouse overlooking Central Park.
Isabella’s trial was the sensation of the media. The investigation revealed her true identity: she was a serial con artist wanted in three different states under different names, specializing in marrying wealthy men and slowly poisoning them to inherit their fortunes. She and Marcus had planned to slowly administer small doses of toxin to William once Ethan was legally out of the picture. Thanks to Emma’s bravery, the entire conspiracy had been dismantled. Isabella and Marcus were facing life sentences without the possibility of parole.
Emma had spent the last three weeks recovering in her small apartment in Queens. She had received a generous severance package from the Sterling estate’s legal team, but she hadn't heard from William directly. She assumed he wanted to put the entire nightmare behind him, including her.
One sunny afternoon, a knock sounded at her door.
Emma opened it to find William Sterling standing there. He wasn't wearing his usual billionaire custom suit; he was wearing a simple sweater and jeans. Beside him stood Ethan.
Ethan’s color had returned. His eyes were bright, and he was smiling.
"Emma!" Ethan cried, lunging forward to wrap his arms around her waist.
Emma gasped, tears filling her eyes as she hugged the boy tightly. "Oh, Ethan! Look at you! You look so healthy!"
"I’m doing great, Emma! I’m playing soccer again!" Ethan beamed.

William smiled warmly, his eyes filled with a deep, quiet gratitude. "May we come in, Emma?"
"Of course, please," Emma said, stepping aside.
