Chapter 9 - A New Beginning
William sat on Emma’s modest sofa, holding a cup of tea she had made.
"The lawyers told me they sent you the settlement," William began softly. "But money doesn't cover what you did for us, Emma. You didn't just save Ethan’s life; you saved mine. I was blind, blinded by grief and the desire to rebuild a perfect family, and I almost let a monster destroy us."
"You were hurting, Mr. Sterling," Emma said gently. "Grief makes us vulnerable. Isabella knew how to exploit that. You shouldn't blame yourself."
William shook his head. "I do blame myself. But I am determined to make things right. Ethan and I are starting over. No more big, empty mansions filled with superficial people. We are keeping it simple."
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a document.
"I know you used to study child psychology before you had to drop out to support your family," William said. "I’ve established a foundation in Ethan’s name—The Ethan Sterling Foundation for Abused and Vulnerable Children. We are building centers across the city to provide safe spaces, therapy, and protection for children in danger."
He handed her the document.
"I want you to be the Executive Director, Emma. You will have full funding, a complete team, and the power to help thousands of children who, like Ethan, have no voice. And of course, your tuition to finish your degree will be fully covered by the foundation."
Emma stared at the document, her jaw dropping. Tears spilled over her eyelashes. "William... I... I don't know what to say. This is my dream."
"You earned it, Emma," William said, his voice thick with emotion. "And Ethan has one more request."

Ethan stepped forward, tugging at Emma’s hand. "Emma, we don't want you to be our housekeeper anymore. We want you to be our friend. Will you come to Sunday dinners with us?"
Emma laughed through her tears, hugging Ethan close. "I would love nothing more, Ethan."
