Chapter 2 - The Puppeteer's Trap

From her cramped hiding place, Emma held her breath so hard her lungs burned. Through the gap in the drywall, she watched Isabella unlock the heavy steel door. The click of the lock sounded like a gunshot in the confined space.

Isabella stepped inside the cell. Ethan shrank back against the wall, clutching his teddy bear like a shield.

"I don't want the medicine," Ethan whimpered, his voice trembling. "It makes my head hurt. It makes me see bad things."

Isabella’s elegant facade fractured for a fraction of a second. A cold, venomous sneer twisted her beautiful features. She grabbed Ethan’s arm with a grip so tight her manicured nails dug into his skin. "You will take it, you ungrateful little brat. Do you think I enjoy coming down into this filthy hole? Your father is upstairs hosting a gala for five hundred people, believing you are breathing the fresh air of the Maine pine woods. If you ruin this for me, I will ensure you never see the light of day again."

"William... William doesn't know?" Emma thought, a wave of shock washing over her. William Sterling wasn't a monster; he was being systematically deceived.

Ethan cried out as Isabella forced the pill into his mouth, holding his nose until he was forced to swallow. She threw him back onto the mattress, wiping her hands on a silk handkerchief as if she had just touched something contagious.

"Good boy," Isabella whispered, her voice returning to its chilling, melodic tone. "Just a few more weeks. Once the trust fund papers are finalized, and your father signs over the guardianship rights to me in the event of his... untimely departure... we can finally put you somewhere permanent. A nice, quiet boarding school in Switzerland, perhaps. Or somewhere even more private."

Emma’s blood ran cold. Untimely departure. Isabella wasn't just targeting Ethan; she was planning to murder William Sterling.

Isabella turned and exited the cell, locking the heavy door behind her. She began to ascend the concrete stairs, her heels clicking rhythmically away.

Emma waited until the sound of the door at the top of the stairs closing signaled Isabella’s exit. She slipped out from behind the drywall, her mind racing. She had to act. She had to tell William.

She ran to the cell window. "Ethan, I promise you, I am going to get you out of here. I have to find a way to get the key, or get the police. But I have to play along for just a little bit so she doesn't suspect anything. Can you hold on for me, sweetie?"

Ethan, already looking drowsy from the drug, nodded weakly. "Please hurry, Emma. I’m so scared."

Emma kissed the glass pane, a silent vow sealing her commitment. She climbed the spiral staircase, her mind formulating a desperate plan. She pushed the baroque painting open, stepped back into the quiet staff corridor, and slid the frame back into place.

As she turned around, she collided directly with a solid chest.

"Emma?"

She gasped, looking up. Standing in front of her was Marcus, the estate’s head of security. His eyes locked onto her pale face, her disheveled hair, and then drifted slowly to the baroque painting behind her.
