Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Siege

The board of directors of Whitaker Hospitality gathered at 9:00 AM inside the icy glass tower of the company’s Portland headquarters. The atmosphere was stifling, heavy with distrust and corporate anxiety.
Daniel Mercer was already seated at the far end of the mahogany conference table, flanked by two high-profile white-collar defense attorneys. He looked immaculate, wearing a tailored charcoal suit and a serene smile designed to project absolute innocence. On the television screens behind him, financial news networks flashed red headlines about the impending bankruptcy of Whitaker Hospitality.
"Let’s bring this meeting to order," announced Arthur Vance, the senior board member and long-time ally of Daniel’s faction. "We are here under emergency conditions. Mr. Mercer has brought forth alarming allegations regarding Grant Whitaker’s fitness to serve as Chief Executive Officer. Furthermore, the delay on the Northline transaction puts us in direct breach of our debt obligations."
Daniel leaned forward, placing his hands flat on the glass table. "Members of the board, it paining me deeply to say this, but Grant has cracked under pressure. Last night, at a private dinner, he suffered a paranoid breakdown. He violently accused me of treason based on the gibberish of a servant’s young child. He tore up the $31.8 million Northline contract—a deal that was our only salvation."
Murmurs of shock and anger rippled through the older board members.
"Is this true, Grant?" Arthur demanded, turning to Grant, who sat calmly at the head of the table.
Grant slowly opened his leather briefcase. Beside him, Rebecca Sloan set up a high-definition projector.
"What Daniel forgot to mention," Grant said, his voice ringing with absolute authority, "is what was hidden behind my father's portrait during that dinner."
With a flick of a switch, the projector displayed gigantic, high-resolution scans of the documents retrieved from the hidden envelope and the decrypted contents of the USB flash drive.
"These are Northline Development Partners’ internal appraisal documents," Grant stated, pointing to the screen. "The real valuation of the Whitaker Harbor Hotel isn't $31.8 million. It’s $142 million. Daniel Mercer conspired with Northline to undervalue our asset, pocket a secret $12 million offshore kickback, and deliberately plunge this company into a artificial liquidity crisis."
The room erupted into chaos. Board members leaned in, staring wide-eyed at the financial paper trail, bank account numbers, and wire transfer logs displayed on the screen.
Daniel’s face transformed instantly from calm superiority to purple fury. He stood up, slamming his hand down. "These are forged! Grant fabricated these files overnight to cover up his own incompetence!"
"We’ve already tracked the offshore accounts listed on that drive, Daniel," Rebecca Sloan interjected coolly. "They bear your signature, verified by financial forensic analysts at 4:00 AM this morning. Federal prosecutors have already been handed a duplicate copy."
Daniel’s lead attorney leaned over, whispered frantically into Daniel's ear, and gathered his papers. The evidence was damning, precise, and irrefutable.
Arthur Vance dropped his pen, looking at Daniel with disgust. "You sold us out, Daniel?"
Grant stood up, towering over the room. "The board will now vote on the immediate termination of Daniel Mercer, the revocation of his stock options, and the initiation of full legal action against Northline Development Partners."
The vote was unanimous. Daniel Mercer stood frozen as security guards entered the executive suite, taking him by the arms to escort him from the building.

As Daniel was dragged toward the glass doors, he turned his head, glaring at Grant with unadulterated venom. "You think you’ve won, Grant?" Daniel sneered. "Apex Capital still holds forty-five million of your debt, due in twenty-seven days. You can’t raise that cash in time. You saved your dad’s hotel, but you just lost the entire empire!"
Grant watched the doors close behind his traitorous former friend, knowing that Daniel’s final warning was painfully true. The battle in the boardroom was won, but the war for survival had just begun.
