Chapter 5 - Night of the Breach

The darkness inside the mansion was heavy and immediate. The howling December wind rattled the French doors leading to the snow-draped gardens.

"Get Claire and Lily into the panic room downstairs!" Grant ordered, his instincts taking over.

"No, Grant!" Claire cried out, clutching Lily close as the toddler whined in fear. "We aren't leaving you!"

"It’s safe down there," Grant insisted, his voice firm and protective. "Marcus, take them!"

Suddenly, the glass in the conservatory shattered with a deafening crash. Heavy footsteps echoed through the grand hallway. Intruders had breached the perimeter, taking advantage of the blizzard to mask their approach.

Marcus drew his sidearm, pushing Claire and Lily behind a concealed reinforced door in the library's mahogany bookcase. "Stay inside, Mrs. Bennett! Do not open this door for anyone except me or Mr. Whitaker!"

Grant grabbed a heavy brass fireplace poker from the hearth. In the dim moonlight filtering through the frosted windows, three shadowy figures clad in dark winter gear broke into the library. These were not mere corporate fixers; they were hired muscle sent to destroy original evidence and intimidate Grant into submission.

"Where is the hard drive, Whitaker?" one of the men growled, his voice muffled by a ski mask. "Hand over the flash drive and the original journals, or you don’t make it to sunrise."

"You’re too late," Grant gritted out, stepping into a defensive stance. "The federal prosecutors already have every byte of data."

The lead intruder lunged forward with an iron bar. Grant parried the blow with the brass poker, the metal clashing with a shower of sparks. Years of athletic training kicked in as Grant tackled the intruder into a glass display case, shattering it into a hundred pieces.

Meanwhile, Marcus engaged the other two men in the darkened corridor, gunshots echoing through the massive estate.

In the hidden room beneath the library, Claire held Lily tightly against her chest, listening to the horrifying sounds of struggle above. Lily was trembling, holding her stuffed bunny against her tear-stained face.

"Mommy... is the bear fighting?" Lily whispered.

"Yes, baby," Claire tears dripped onto her child’s hair. "The bear is protecting us."

Suddenly, the library door above was forced open with a heavy thud. A figure stepped toward the hidden bookcase door. Claire’s heart stopped. She saw a shadow through the reinforced peephole—a man holding a crowbar, trying to pry open the concealed lock.

Claire knew she couldn't just hide. She looked around the panic room and spotted a heavy steel fire extinguisher mounted on the wall.

When the concealed door was finally pried open, the intruder lunged inward—only to be struck violently across the face by Claire wielding the heavy extinguisher with all her strength. The man staggered backward, gasping, as Marcus rushed in from behind, tackling him to the floor and securing him with zip-ties.

The estate security team quickly regained control of the house as local police sirens wailed in the distance, cutting through the blizzard.

Grant rushed back into the library, bruised, bleeding from a small cut on his temple, but completely frantic. "Claire! Lily!"

Claire stepped out from the hidden doorway, breathing heavily, holding a safe and unharmed Lily. Grant didn't hesitate; he wrapped his large arms around both of them, pulling them close against his chest.

"You're safe," Grant breathed, his heart pounding violently. "I've got you. You're safe."

Claire buried her face in Grant’s shoulder, feeling the solid, unshakable warmth of the man who had risked his life to protect them.
