Chapter 4 - Shadow over the Estate

While Grant waged war in the city, Claire and three-year-old Lily were relocated to the grand master suite in the east wing of the Whitaker estate. For Claire, stepping out of the small housekeeping quarters into the heart of the mansion felt surreal.

Grant had hired a private security team, led by a solemn former Marine named Marcus, to patrol the snow-covered grounds twenty-four hours a day. Yet, despite the high-tech security cameras and guards, an unsettling tension hung in the cold winter air.

That afternoon, Grant returned home early, exhausted but determined. He found Lily sitting on the plush Persian rug in the library, drawing pictures with colorful crayons while Claire organized old historical archives of the hotel.

"Look, Mr. Grant!" Lily squeaked, holding up a drawing of a monstrously big house with a giant brown bear standing in front of it. "I drew the bear protecting the house!"

Grant’s stern face melted into a genuine, warm smile—a expression his staff hadn't seen in years. He knelt down beside the little girl. "Is that bear you, Lily?"

"No! That's you!" Lily giggled, touching his dark jacket. "You scolded the bad man!"

Grant looked up at Claire, who was watching them with a gentle smile. "She’s kept my spirits up all morning," Claire said softly. "How did the board meeting go?"

"Daniel is gone, and the board is backed behind me," Grant said, sitting down in an armchair near the crackling fireplace. "But Daniel wasn't working alone. Northline has deep political and financial connections. They’re blocking our access to traditional banking loans. Nobody in Portland will lend us forty-five million dollars with the Apex debt deadline hanging over our heads."

Claire set her papers down and walked over, handing him a warm cup of herbal tea. "Grant, your father always said that the strength of this business wasn't in the buildings, but in the community that built them. Have you checked his personal journals?"

Grant blinked. "My father's journals?"

Claire walked over to a heavy oak cabinet near the portrait wall. "When I was cleaning the study last year, Mr. Charles showed me a series of leather books where he kept personal contacts—people he helped before Whitaker Hospitality became a giant corporation."

Grant took the dust-covered leather journal from Claire's hands. As he flipped through his father's handwritten pages, his eyes stopped on a section marked 1982 - The Casco Bay Fishermen’s Cooperative.

His father had secretly financed dozens of small local businesses, maritime families, and private regional investors during the economic downturn of the 1980s. These were old-money families and local industry titans who owed their entire livelihoods to Charles Whitaker’s quiet generosity—people who hated predatory equity firms like Northline.

Grant felt a surge of hope in his chest. "Claire... you just gave us our blueprint."

Before he could say more, the study lights flickered violently and plummeted the room into darkness. Outside, the low rumble of a heavy engine echoed near the estate's rear gates.

Marcus, the head of security, burst into the room, his tactical flashlight cutting through the shadow. "Mr. Whitaker! Someone just cut the main power lines to the estate, and our security perimeter sensors in the woods were just triggered!"
