Chapter 1 - Shadows of the Past

The fluorescent lights of the hospital waiting room hummed with a sterile, relentless buzz. Elena sat on the edge of the hard plastic chair, her fingers intertwined so tightly her knuckles turned white. Across from her, Richard, her husband, paced the length of the hallway, his boots clicking against the polished floor in a nervous rhythm. Inside the examination room, eight-year-old Ethan was being checked by a team of pediatricians and child psychologists.
When the heavy wooden door finally swung open, Dr. Vance stepped out, his face etched with a mix of relief and grim reality. Elena bolted to her feet. "Is he okay? Please tell me he’s okay."
"Physically, he is severely malnourished and dehydrated," Dr. Vance explained quietly, lowering his voice so it wouldn't carry into the room. "He has old fractures in his left wrist that healed improperly, and extensive scarring on his back. Mrs. Vance... Ethan wasn't merely living on the streets. He was held somewhere for a very long time before he escaped."
Richard stopped pacing, his eyes widening in horror. "Held? You mean someone kidnapped him intentionally?"

Dr. Vance nodded slowly. "The psychological markers suggest long-term confinement and forced labor. He exhibits extreme hyper-vigilance. When we tried to offer him a tray of warm food, he didn't eat it—he hid it inside his shirt sleeves."
Inside the room, six-year-old Sophie sat quietly on the edge of the exam table beside Ethan. She didn't press him with questions or try to touch him when he flinched. She simply pulled a small coloring book from her backpack and placed a yellow crayon on the sheet between them. Ethan looked at the bright wax cylinder, then up at his little sister. For the first time since entering the hospital, the tension in his shoulders dropped a fraction of an inch.
