Chapter 5 - The Whispering Stranger

The threat manifested on a crisp Tuesday afternoon at the local community park.
Sophie and Ethan were playing near the wooden jungle gym while Elena watched from a nearby bench, momentarily distracted by a call from Detective Miller regarding Ethan's case file.
A tall man in a dark cap approached the perimeter fence of the playground. He squatted down near the bushes where Sophie was digging in the woodchips.
"Hey there, little girl," the man muttered, his voice smooth yet predatory. "Is that your brother over there? Ethan?"
Sophie paused, holding her plastic shovel tight. She remembered her mother’s strict warnings, but more than that, she saw the man reach into his jacket pocket, pulling out a silver whistle identical to the one Ethan had described in his nightmares.

"Ethan, run!" Sophie screamed at the top of her lungs, throwing a handful of woodchips directly into the stranger's face.
Ethan’s survival instincts kicked in instantly. He sprinted toward Elena, grabbing his mother’s coat just as the stranger scrambled back into the bushes and vanished into an awaiting vehicle. Elena drew both children into her arms, her heart hammering against her ribs as sirens wailed in the distance.
