Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Broken Pieces
A year passed, marked by monumental milestones. Ethan celebrated his ninth birthday—his first real birthday party in five years. The living room was filled with colorful balloons, a large chocolate cake, and wrapped presents.
Though he still struggled with academic gaps caused by his years away from school, Ethan showed a remarkable aptitude for mathematics and drawing. Sophie tutored him patiently every afternoon after school, teaching him sight words while he helped her solve complex math puzzles.
The neighborhood that had once watched the family with pity now celebrated their resilience. The family dog, a golden retriever mix they adopted from a shelter and named "Lucky," became Ethan's constant companion, sleeping at the foot of his bed every night to guard against any lingering bad dreams.
