Chapter 2 - The Shadow Empire

"Override the secondary door!" Julian roared into his radio. "Lock down the perimeter gates! Don't let her vehicle leave the driveway!"

"No," Daniel said, stepping forward, his voice halting the security team in their tracks.

Julian turned, staring at his boss in disbelief. "Mr. Carter, she just tried to assassinate you in your own home! We have her on camera! We have the chemical proof!"

"If you catch her on the driveway, she’s a suspect in a domestic dispute," Daniel said, his eyes burning with a cold, calculated rage that had taken decades of corporate warfare to forge. "I don't want her arrested for a botched poisoning, Julian. I want to know who gave her the key code to my emergency exit. I want to know where she got a synthetic military neurotoxin. And I want to know who paid her to sit at my table for two years."

Daniel turned to Dr. Vance. "Richard, seal those samples. Take them directly to the state crime laboratory under my private legal order. Do not log them in the public database yet."

He then looked down at Annie. The little girl was watching him, her small hands still trembling. Daniel knelt down until he was at eye level with her. For the first time in years, the ruthless billionaire whose name struck terror into European hedge funds allowed his expression to soften completely.

"Annie," Daniel said gently. "What you did today took more courage than most grown men possess. From this moment on, you and your mother are under my personal protection. You don't live in that apartment downtown anymore. You stay here, in the guest wing, with round-the-clock guards."

Marisol burst into tears, covering her face. "Mr. Carter, we can't accept—"

"You can, and you will, Marisol," Daniel insisted, standing up. "Your daughter saved my life. I don't forget debts like that."

Within two hours, Daniel’s inner circle had assembled in the mansion's primary study—a vast, oak-paneled room lined with historical manuscripts and secure server terminals.

Sitting across from Daniel was Arthur Pendelton, his chief legal counsel for twenty-five years, and Sarah Lin, a former intelligence officer who ran Daniel’s private corporate intelligence network.

Sarah slapped a thick, black leather-bound dossier onto the desk.

"Victoria Lang doesn't exist, Daniel," Sarah said bluntly.

Daniel didn't flinch. "Explain."

"The real Victoria Lang died in a car accident in Seattle nine years ago," Sarah revealed, tapping a series of high-resolution photographs onto his tablet screen. "The woman who has been sleeping in your house for two years is named Helena Vance. No relation to Dr. Richard Vance, but a former operative for Apex Global Asset Management."

Daniel’s jaw tightened. Apex Global. His primary rival in the multi-billion-dollar acquisition of Northern Rail, the transcontinental infrastructure project he was set to finalize next week.

"She wasn't acting alone," Arthur added, sliding a stack of financial documents across the mahogany desk. "Two hours ago, while you were sealing that butter dish, my team executed a forensic audit of the wedding trust accounts you set up last month."

"What did you find, Arthur?"

"She didn't just alter your life insurance policies, Daniel," Arthur said, his voice thick with gravity. "She used forged power-of-attorney documents—stamped by a crooked notary in Manhattan—to transfer twenty-two percent of your voting shares in Carter Enterprises into an offshore shell company registered in the Cayman Islands."

"When was the transfer scheduled to complete?" Daniel asked.

"Tomorrow at midnight," Sarah answered. "The moment you were pronounced dead of a 'spontaneous cardiac event,' the shell company would have activated its proxy rights, called an emergency board meeting, and sold Carter Enterprises to Apex Global for pennies on the dollar."

Daniel leaned back in his leather chair, staring at the ceiling. The sheer scale of the deception was breathtaking. Every smile, every gentle touch, every conversation about flower arrangements and wedding songs had been part of a meticulously timed corporate execution.

"Where is she now?" Daniel asked quiet.

"She took a unmarked sedan from the service road," Sarah replied. "Her phone was turned off five minutes after she left the estate. But we tracked the secondary signal from her vehicle's built-in GPS. She's heading toward a private airfield in Teterboro."

Daniel stood up, pulling his jacket on. "Call the airfield manager. Tell him his landing permits are revoked."

May you like

"And then?" Julian asked, checking the holster beneath his suit jacket.

"Then," Daniel said, his eyes glittering like crushed ice, "we go meet my fiancée."
