Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

By 2:00 AM, the Carter Estate in Greenwich was lit up like a fortress under siege. Floodlights illuminated the perimeter stone walls, and private security personnel paced the grounds with attack dogs.
Inside the grand ballroom, eleven household staff members—housekeepers, gardeners, cooks, and maintenance technicians—sat in velvet chairs, looking nervous and confused.
Daniel walked into the room, flanked by Sarah Lin and Dr. Richard Vance.
He didn't sit down. He stood near the grand fireplace, looking at the people who had maintained his home for years.
"Earlier today," Daniel began, his voice cold and precise, "an attempt was made on my life inside this house."
Gasps rippled through the staff. Marisol, sitting near the back row, squeezed her daughter Annie’s hand tightly.
"Thanks to Annie," Daniel continued, gesturing toward the little girl, "that attempt failed. Helena Vance—the woman you knew as Victoria Lang—is currently in federal custody."
Daniel paused, letting the weight of his words settle over the room.
"However," Daniel said, pulling a small silver drive from his pocket, "Helena Vance did not act alone. She had access to internal security codes, service entrances, and private pantry vaults that only three people in this room possessed master keys to."
Sarah stepped forward, opening a laptop connected to the ballroom’s large projection screen.
An image appeared on the wall—a night-vision camera feed from three nights ago, taken inside the mansion's subterranean wine cellar.
The video showed a figure dressed in a dark jacket unlocking the temperature-controlled vault where Daniel kept his private collection of rare vintages. The figure pulled out a 1982 Chateau Margaux—the exact bottle set aside for Daniel’s private dinner with his senior board members tomorrow evening—and used a fine medical syringe to inject a clear liquid through the foil seal on the cork.
The camera zoomed in on the figure’s face as they turned toward the exit.
It was not Victoria.
It was Charles Montgomery—Daniel’s personal butler and house manager for twelve years.
The ballroom went completely silent.
Charles, standing near the edge of the room in his immaculate black suit, turned ash-gray. His knees buckled, and he grabbed the back of a chair to keep from falling.
"Charles," Daniel said softly, the disappointment in his voice far more terrifying than anger. "Twelve years. I paid for your daughter's medical treatments in London. I paid off your home mortgage when your wife passed. Why?"
Charles lowered his head, tears streaming down his wrinkled cheeks. "They... they have my grandson, Mr. Carter," he sobbed, falling to his knees on the parquet floor. "Apex... they brought me photographs of him outside his school in Boston two months ago. They said if I didn't give Miss Victoria the keycodes and help her prepare the wine... they would end him."
Daniel stared at the man who had poured his coffee every morning for a decade.
"Where is your grandson right now, Charles?" Daniel asked quietly.
"In... in a safe house near Cambridge," Charles wept. "They forced me to check in with them every six hours!"
Daniel turned to Sarah Lin. "Sarah. Get a tactical team to Cambridge. Find the boy."
"Already on it," Sarah said, tapping her earpiece. "Team is five minutes out from the target address."
Daniel walked over to Charles, looking down at the kneeling old man. "You should have come to me, Charles. I would have moved heaven and earth to save your grandson. Instead, you put poison in my home."
"I’m sorry, sir!" Charles wailed, pressing his forehead against the floor. "I’m so sorry!"
"Take him to the study," Daniel instructed the security guards. "Keep him comfortable until Sarah’s team confirms the boy is safe. Then hand him over to the federal authorities."

As the guards led the weeping house manager away, Daniel turned to the remaining staff.
"The rest of you are cleared," Daniel said gently. "Go to your quarters. Marisol... stay behind for a moment."
