Chapter 3 - The Teterboro Trap

The rain began to fall as Daniel’s convoy of three black SUVs tore down the highway toward New Jersey.
Inside the rear passenger compartment, Daniel sat in darkness, his tablet illuminating the cold features of his face. On the screen was a live video feed from Teterboro Airport’s private hangar number four.
A sleek Gulfstream G650 sat on the tarmac, its jet engines whining as they spooled up for departure. Standing near the boarding stairs was Victoria—or Helena Vance—dressed in a rain trench coat, speaking furiously into an encrypted satellite phone.
"She’s panicked," Sarah observed from the seat beside Daniel. "She knows the butter test failed, but she doesn't know how much we've uncovered about Apex Global."
"She thinks she’s flying to Zurich," Daniel said. "She thinks she can manage the proxy transfer from a Swiss bank account once the clock strikes midnight."
"We have two cars blocking the runway access," Julian reported from the front seat. "The local police chief is on my line. He’s holding off on entering the tarmac until you arrive, per your request."
"Good," Daniel said. "This isn't a police matter yet. It's a personal one."
The SUV convoy swept onto the tarmac, water spraying from their heavy tires, blinding the Gulfstream’s pilot with high-beam halogen lights. The three vehicles slid into a tight formation around the jet's boarding stairs, cutting off any path of escape.
The jet's engines slowly wound down, their deafening roar fading into the whistling wind and heavy rain.
Daniel stepped out of the SUV, holding a large black umbrella. He walked slowly, deliberately, toward the bottom of the airstairs.
Victoria stood five steps up, her satellite phone still clutched in her right hand, her silver trench coat wet from the rain. She looked down at him, her composure finally beginning to fracture.
"You should have let me board the plane, Daniel," she called out over the sound of the falling rain. "If I fly to Switzerland, you get your company back without a public scandal. You keep your dignity. You tell the press we called off the wedding due to 'irreconcilable differences.'"
"And what do you get?" Daniel asked, stopping at the base of the stairs.
"I get to live," she snapped, a cold smile appearing on her pale lips. "You think I’m the monster here? I was hired to do a job, Daniel. Apex bought your senior board members six months ago. Your own executives signed off on the proxy transfer! I was just the delivery mechanism."
Daniel’s expression didn't change. "Which board members?"
Victoria laughed—a bitter, hollow sound. "Do you really think I’m going to give you their names for free? Step back and let this plane take off, or those shares transfer automatically at midnight anyway! You can't stop the financial network from a runway in New Jersey!"
Daniel pulled his phone from his pocket, pressed a button, and held it up toward her.
"I don't need your corporate names, Helena," Daniel said calmly. "Because three minutes ago, Prosecutor Adriana Beltrán signed a federal asset-freeze order covering every shell company linked to Apex Global in the Western Hemisphere."
Victoria’s hand went limp. The satellite phone slipped from her fingers, clattering down the metal stairs, bouncing onto the wet concrete at Daniel’s feet.
"How... how did you get Beltrán involved so fast?" she whispered, her eyes widening in genuine terror.
"You made one catastrophic mistake, Helena," Daniel said, stepping up the first stair. "You assumed I was just a wealthy businessman who relied on lawyers to fight his battles. You forgot that before I built Carter Enterprises, I spent ten years running risk-intelligence for the Department of Defense."
Sarah Lin stepped out from behind the SUV, holding a stack of freshly printed federal arrest warrants.
"Helena Vance," Sarah announced, her voice echoing across the rainy tarmac. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, grand conspiracy, corporate espionage, and federal wire fraud."
Two armed federal agents stepped up the stairs behind Victoria, snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.
As they dragged her down the stairs past Daniel, she leaned in, her voice dark and poisonous. "It’s not over, Daniel. You think you saved yourself today? Look at your house. Look at who you let into your inner circle. The butter was just Plan A."
Daniel stared at her as the agents forced her into the back of a federal vehicle.
Plan A.
The words hung in the cold rain like a physical threat.
Daniel turned to Julian. "Where is Annie and her mother?"
May you like
"They’re safe at the mansion, sir," Julian replied. "I left four armed guards at the guest house."
"Double it," Daniel ordered, stepping back into his SUV. "And call the estate. I want every employee who has entered that house in the last forty-eight hours placed in the grand ballroom under private guard."
