Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Siege

At 8:55 AM, the thirty-eighth floor of the Mason & Carter Building in midtown Manhattan was a hive of nervous energy.

Eight senior board members sat around the forty-foot glass table inside the executive boardroom. At the head of the table sat Marcus Mason—a sixty-eight-year-old titan of industry with silver hair, a sharp pinstripe suit, and an air of absolute authority.

Marcus was pouring himself a glass of mineral water, his hand perfectly steady.

"Where is Daniel?" asked Arthur Vance, a senior board member. "He called this emergency meeting with less than an hour's notice. Is this about the Northern Rail acquisition?"

Marcus smiled warmly, setting his glass down. "Daniel has been under immense pressure lately, gentlemen. Between the wedding preparations and the European investor calls, I fear he may be burning the candle at both ends. I spoke with his fiancée, Victoria, last night. She mentioned he wasn't feeling well."

"Is that what she told you, Marcus?" a deep voice rang out from the doorway.

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Daniel Carter walked into the room. He didn't look tired. He didn't look sick. He wore an immaculate bespoke charcoal suit, a dark tie, and an posture that radiated absolute, lethal dominance.

Behind him walked Prosecutor Adriana Beltrán, flanked by four federal marshals carrying heavy evidence boxes.

Marcus Mason’s hand twitched slightly against his water glass. "Daniel... what is the meaning of this? Why are federal officers in our boardroom?"

Daniel walked slowly to the opposite end of the table, resting his hands flat against the glass surface.

"Thirty-six hours ago, Marcus," Daniel began, his voice calm and resonant, "my fiancée attempted to administer a fatal dose of synthetic neurotoxin into my breakfast."

Shocked shouts exploded around the table.

"My God! Daniel, are you insane?!" Marcus exclaimed, standing up, his face displaying an expert mix of horror and concern. "Victoria tried to poison you?! Where is she? Have you called the police?"

"She is currently in federal custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center," Daniel said smoothly. "Along with two operatives who were holding Charles Montgomery's grandson hostage in Boston."

Marcus blinked, a faint flicker of panic darting across his eyes before he masked it. "Charles? Your house manager? Daniel, this sounds like a horrific, coordinated attack by our competitors! We need to lock down the company assets immediately!"

"We already have," Prosecutor Beltrán announced, stepping forward and placing a stack of legal documents in the center of the table. "Mr. Mason, as of 8:00 AM today, federal agents executed search warrants on your private residence, your offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, and your personal server inside this building."

Marcus’s face turned gray. "This is outrageous! On what grounds?!"

"On the grounds of wire fraud, attempted murder as an accessory, treasonous corporate espionage, and illegal coordination with Apex Global," Beltrán stated coldly.

Daniel pulled a tablet from his jacket, pressing play on an audio file.

Marcus’s own voice echoed loudly through the high-end speakers of the boardroom:

“Make sure the dose is administered before the Thursday board meeting. Once Daniel is out of the way, Helena’s proxy will combine with my voting shares. We sell Northern Rail to Apex, split the three-billion-dollar liquidation dividend, and let the press blame his death on an unexpected heart defect.”

The board members gasped, backing away from Marcus as if he had suddenly caught a contagious plague.

Marcus collapsed back into his leather chair, staring at Daniel with eyes full of shock and sudden, desperate weakness.

"How..." Marcus rasped out, his voice cracking. "How did you get that recording?"

"Helena Vance was a professional operative, Marcus," Daniel revealed, stepping closer to his former mentor. "She didn't trust you any more than she trusted me. She recorded every phone call you made to her private satellite device as leverage in case the plan went wrong."

Daniel leaned down, resting his face inches from Marcus’s.

"You sat at my wedding rehearsal dinner two nights ago, Marcus," Daniel whispered, his voice dripping with pure ice. "You gave a toast to my late wife’s memory. You called me the son you never had. And all the while, you were waiting for me to eat butter mixed with neurotoxin."

Marcus looked away, unable to meet Daniel’s eyes.

"Take him," Beltrán ordered.

The federal marshals stepped forward, pulling Marcus Mason out of his executive chair, snapping handcuffs over his wrists, and leading him out of the boardroom in front of the silent, terrified board members.
