Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Lineage

The coffee mug slipped from Rachel's hand, shattering against the wooden floorboards, dark liquid pooling around the porcelain shards.

Maddie looked up from her crayons, startled by the noise. "Mommy?"

"It's okay, sweetie," Rachel said, her voice shaking violently as she dropped to her knees to clean up the mess. "It's okay. Stay on the rug."

Julian stepped forward, helping her gather the broken pieces. "I know this is catastrophic, Mrs. Vance. But you need to understand the implications before you go back to Chicago."

Rachel stood up, leaning against the counter for support, her mind racing at blinding speed.

"Grant... Grant isn't a Bennett," she rasped. "Evelyn's entire life... her pride, her position in society, the Bennett Steel fortune... it was all built on the claim that Grant was the direct descendant of Arthur Bennett."

"Arthur Bennett died without a biological heir," Julian confirmed, sitting back down. "In 1991, Arthur Bennett was fifty-five years old and dying of prostate cancer. Evelyn went to Dr. Vale's private clinic in Zurich. Grant was conceived via the exact same method your daughter was."

"Which means Grant and Maddie..." Rachel's breath hitched in her chest.

"Maddie isn't just Grant's adopted daughter in the eyes of the law," Julian said gravely. "Genetically, Grant is Maddie's half-brother."

The horror of the revelation hit Rachel like a physical blow. The Bennett family's obsession with "purity," their arrogant dismissals of outsiders, their endless lectures about legacy—it was all a monstrous, incestuous lie constructed by Evelyn Bennett to secure a multi-million-dollar inheritance thirty years ago.

Before Rachel could speak, the heavy sound of tires grinding over the gravel driveway echoed from outside.

Rachel rushed to the window.

A black town car had pulled up behind her SUV. The door opened, and Grant stepped out, wearing a rumpled coat, his hair uncombed, his face gaunt and pale under the bright morning sun.

Behind his car, a second vehicle pulled up—Evelyn's silver Mercedes.

"They followed you," Julian said, standing up beside her.

"Let them come in," Rachel said, her fear instantly evaporating, replaced by a cold, burning rage that had been building for five long years. "It's time to end this."
