Chapter 6 - The Paper Fortress

By Monday afternoon, the news had shattered the highest circles of Chicago society.
The Chicago Tribune ran a front-page exposé on the Vale Reproductive Institute, citing regulatory violations, falsified donor records, and an ongoing federal investigation into systemic fraud. While the public article focused on the medical ethics violations, the quiet corridors of the Cook County Probate Court were alive with rumors of a multi-million-dollar estate challenge.
Rachel sat in Clara Mercer’s corner office on the fortieth floor of the city's financial district.
"The Bennett family trust attorneys have already filed for an injunction to seal the probate records from 1992," Clara said, turning her computer monitor toward Rachel. "Arthur Bennett's surviving nephews—Uncle Thomas and his brothers—have hired a high-powered litigation team. They are preparing to file an asset recovery lawsuit against Evelyn and Grant for thirty years of fraud."
"Can they take everything?" Rachel asked.
"If the court orders a mandatory exhumation or uses Grant's DNA to confirm he isn't Arthur's biological son, yes," Clara explained. "The trust agreement specifically states that only direct, lawful biological descendants of Arthur Bennett are eligible to hold shares in Bennett Steel or draw from the family trust."
"What about Grant?" Rachel asked, feeling a strange, distant pity for the man she had loved for seven years.
"Grant is completely broken," Clara said flatly. "His firm suspended him this morning. The board of directors at his bank asked for his resignation to avoid negative publicity. He's staying at a hotel near the airport, refusing to speak to the press."
The door to Clara's office opened, and Julian Vance walked in, carrying a laptop and a manila folder.
"We have a problem," Julian said, setting his laptop on Clara's desk. "Evelyn Bennett isn't going down without a fight. She just signed over her personal liquidity—nearly eight million dollars—to a private security firm in New York."
Rachel frowned. "Why?"
"Because she discovered that my uncle kept a duplicate set of physical DNA samples in a cryogenic facility in Zurich," Julian revealed. "Samples that contain the genetic profiles of every child born at his clinic—including Grant and Maddie."
"She wants to destroy them," Rachel realized instantly.
"If those samples are destroyed before the court-ordered testing next week," Julian said, "the legal team representing Arthur Bennett's nephews won't be able to conclusively prove Grant isn't a Bennett. And more importantly, you won't be able to establish Maddie's legal protection against the Bennett family's attempts to strip her of her trust fund."

Rachel stood up from her chair. "She tried to ruin my daughter's life to save her pride. I won't let her burn the evidence to save her money."
"Then we need to get to Zurich before Evelyn's team does," Julian said.
