Chapter 8 - The Fall of the House of Bennett

The emergency hearing at the Cook County Probate Court was closed to the public, but the tension inside the high-ceilinged courtroom was thick enough to choke on.
Evelyn Bennett sat at the defense table, flanked by four senior partners from Chicago's top defense firm. She wore a black silk suit, her hair immaculately styled, though her face had grown gaunt, her cheekbones sharp and hollow.
Grant sat two chairs away from her. He looked like a shadow of his former self—his tie loose, his eyes red-rimmed, staring blankly at the polished oak table in front of him.
Rachel sat at the prosecution table alongside Clara Mercer and Julian Vance.
Judge Beatrice Holloway slammed her gavel down, her stern eyes scanning the courtroom. "We are here to review the emergency motion filed by the court-appointed receiver regarding the Bennett Family Trust."
Arthur Bennett's nephew, Thomas Bennett, stood up from the second row of gallery seats, his face flushed with triumph. "Your Honor, we have presented clear evidence that Grant Bennett is not the biological heir of Arthur Bennett! We demand the immediate liquidation of his assets and the full surrender of his shares in Bennett Steel!"
"Quiet, Mr. Bennett," Judge Holloway ordered. She looked down at Clara. "Ms. Mercer, you claim to have definitive forensic evidence regarding the paternity of both Grant Bennett and Madeline Bennett?"
"We do, Your Honor," Clara stood up, handing a certified binder to the court bailiff. "We present the certified genetic analysis conducted by the Swiss Institute of Forensic Science, alongside a handwritten letter from Evelyn Bennett dated March 2018."
Evelyn's chief attorney stood up instantly. "Objection! These documents were obtained from an unverified foreign archive without proper chain-of-custody—"
"The chain of custody was verified by the Federal Bureau of Investigation's medical fraud division two days ago, Counsel," Clara interrupted smoothly. "And Dr. Julian Vance is present in this court to testify under oath."
Judge Holloway opened the binder, her eyes scanning the DNA comparative matrix and the attached letter from Evelyn Bennett.
As the judge read, the room fell into a terrifying silence.
Judge Holloway slowly lowered her glasses, looking directly at Evelyn Bennett with a look of profound disgust.
"Mrs. Bennett," the judge said, her voice dropping into a stern, unforgiving tone. "You fraudulently misrepresented your son's paternity for thirty-four years to secure an estate worth ninety million dollars. And then, in 2018, you conspired with a medical practitioner to covertly manipulate the genetic heritage of your son's legal child."
Grant slowly turned his head to look at his mother. "Mom...? Is that true? You knew I was sterile before I even met Rachel?"
Evelyn didn't look at him. She stared straight ahead, her lips pressed into a thin, bloodless line.
"You knew," Grant rasped, his voice breaking into a sob. "You let me suffer for years thinking I was broken... you let me ruin my marriage... you let me hurt my own daughter..."
"Silence in the court!" Judge Holloway struck her gavel. "Based on the overwhelming forensic evidence, this court orders the immediate freezing of all assets held by Evelyn Bennett. The matter of criminal fraud is hereby referred to the State Attorney General."
The judge turned her gaze to Grant.
"Furthermore," Judge Holloway continued, "the court finds that Madeline Bennett's legal status as Grant Bennett's daughter remains fully intact under state law, as Grant signed all required legal consent forms in good faith. However, given the biological realities, the court grants Rachel Vance full legal and physical custody of Madeline Bennett."

Grant closed his eyes as a heavy, broken sob tore from his throat.
Rachel didn't celebrate. She stood up, gathered her files, and walked toward the exit without giving Evelyn or Grant a second glance.
