Chapter 7 - The Swiss Ledger

Three days later, the cold wind off Lake Zurich carried the scent of rain and mountain snow.
Rachel and Julian stood in the basement archive of the Vance Medical Archive Facility—a private, concrete bunker built into the side of a hill outside the city center.
Across the room, a massive stainless-steel vault door stood open, its interior humming with the sound of low-temperature refrigeration units.
"This was my uncle's true legacy," Julian said, typing a long security code into a wall panel. "He kept everything. Every contract, every photographic log, every genetic sequence."
He pulled a heavy steel tray from the wall, exposing rows of small, frozen glass vials labeled with meticulous, handwritten numbers.
Rachel stepped closer, her eyes scanning the labels.
"Where is Grant's?" she asked.
Julian reached for a black ledger sitting on a nearby stainless-steel desk, flipping through the indexed pages until he reached the year 1991.
"Here," Julian pointed to an entry written in dark fountain pen ink. "Project Bennett. Sample #0012-B. Mother: Evelyn Sterling-Bennett. Father: Adrian Vale."
He pulled a small glass vial from the tray and set it in a cushioned transport case.
"And Maddie's?" Rachel asked.
Julian turned the page to 2018. His finger slid down the column... and then stopped.
His eyebrows knitted together. "That's strange."
Rachel felt her pulse spike. "What? What's wrong?"
"Maddie's entry... it isn't listed under the standard donor substitution protocol," Julian said, pulling a second ledger from the shelf. "My uncle didn't just pick a random sample for you, Rachel."
He held up a yellowed letter tucked inside the ledger. It was written on Evelyn Bennett's personal stationery, dated March 2018—the exact month Rachel and Grant had undergone their IVF cycle.
Rachel took the letter, her hands trembling as she read the handwritten text:
Adrian, My son is foolish, and his wife is demanding a child. If they must use a donor, ensure that the material comes from your personal reserve. I will not have an unknown peasant's blood in my home. Ensure the child carries our family's genetic markers. — E.
Rachel felt the air leave her lungs. "Evelyn... Evelyn arranged Maddie's conception behind our backs."
"She knew Grant was sterile because she had Dr. Vale test him when he was eighteen," Julian said, his voice filled with disgust. "She kept it a secret from Grant his entire life. And when you and Grant went to the clinic, Evelyn personally instructed my uncle to use his own material so the baby would still be genetically tied to her family."

"She manipulated everything," Rachel whispered, tears of rage burning her eyes. "She let Grant believe he was a real Bennett, she let him believe he was choosing a donor, and then she stood in her living room last week and called Maddie an 'outsider.'"
"She's a monster, Rachel," Julian said, closing the transport case with a heavy snap. "But with this letter and these samples, she will never hold power over another human being again."
