Chapter 4 - A Declaration to the Underworld

The garden room of the Moretti estate was bathed in pale morning light. Glass walls looked out over sprawling green lawns, manicured hedges, and ancient oak trees dripping with rain.
Clara sat in an armchair wrapped in a soft cashmere sweater, a cup of warm chamomile tea resting on the small glass table beside her.
Doctor Evans—a trusted private physician who had treated the Moretti family for decades—was packing away his portable ultrasound machine. He smiled gently at Clara, handing her a small black-and-white printed image.
“The fetus is six weeks old, Miss Hayes,” Doctor Evans said reassuringly. “Heartbeat is strong, resting at 145 beats per minute. Aside from mild dehydration and high stress levels, you and the baby are completely healthy. I’ve written a prescription for prenatal vitamins.”
Clara looked down at the tiny white smudge on the dark paper. Tears welled in her eyes, but this time, they were not tears of betrayal or grief. They were tears of quiet, fierce maternal love.
“Thank you, Doctor,” she whispered.
“Rest is your best medicine right now,” the doctor advised, closing his bag. “And don't worry about privacy. Don Vincent’s orders were absolute—your medical records are sealed under his personal security clearance.”
As the doctor exited, the heavy mahogany double doors of the room opened, and Vincent stepped inside.
He had removed his coat and tie, his crisp white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, his sleeves rolled up slightly to reveal tanned, powerful forearms. He looked less like the untouchable corporate billionaire and more like a man who had returned home to his sanctuary.
Clara looked up, her heart taking a strange, erratic leap at the sight of him.
“Doctor Evans says everything is fine,” she said softly, holding up the ultrasound printout.
Vincent walked over to her armchair. He didn't speak immediately; instead, he took the small black-and-white paper from her fingers and studied it with profound intensity.
For a long moment, the ruthless Don of Chicago stood frozen, staring at the tiny white dot representing a life growing inside the woman sitting before him.
“A strong heartbeat,” Vincent murmured, his voice rich and soft.
“Yes,” Clara nodded. “Vincent... what happened with Nathaniel?”
Vincent placed the ultrasound picture carefully on the glass table beside her tea. He pulled up a wooden chair and sat directly across from her, his long legs framing hers.
“Reed has been secured,” Vincent stated calmly. “He will play his part in setting a trap for Marco Falcone this Thursday. After that, he will be permanently exiled from Illinois under strict federal and underworld watch. He will never approach you, speak to you, or see this child for the rest of his natural life.”
Clara let out a long breath she felt she had been holding for days. Relief washed over her like a warm wave, bowing her head. “Thank you...”
“You don't need to thank me, Clara,” Vincent said. He reached out, taking both of her small hands in his massive palms. “Now, we must talk about the future.”
Clara looked into his eyes, a flicker of anxiety returning. “The future? Once the Falcones are dealt with, I can find an apartment outside the city... I can resign quietly so your reputation isn't damaged—”
“Resign?” Vincent interrupted, his brows pulling together in genuine surprise. “Do you honestly believe I am going to let you walk away from me?”
Clara blinked. “Vincent... I’m pregnant with another man’s child. I was involved in a security breach that almost destroyed your routes. The Commission, the other mob families... if they find out I stayed here, they’ll think I’m a liability. They’ll think you’ve gone soft.”
Vincent let out a dark, low chuckle that vibrated through his chest. He tightened his grip on her hands, leaning closer until his face was inches from hers.
“Let them think whatever they damn well please,” Vincent said fiercely. “The Commission doesn't dictate who stays under my roof. And as for my reputation... tomorrow night is the annual Chicago Commerce Gala at the Drake Hotel.”
Clara’s eyes widened. “The Gala? Every major business leader, politician, and mob boss in the Midwest will be there.”
“Precisely,” Vincent smiled, his eyes burning with a dangerous, breathtaking intensity. “And you are going to attend as my official guest.”
“Vincent, no!” Clara gasped, trying to pull her hands back, but he held her firmly. “People know me as your secretary! If I show up on your arm after being missing for two days, the rumors will explode! Nathaniel will—”
“Nathaniel will be in a cell waiting for Thursday night,” Vincent stated relentlessly. “And as for the rumors... let them talk. Tomorrow night, I am declaring to this entire city that Clara Hayes is under the absolute, permanent protection of the Moretti family. Anyone who looks at you wrong, anyone who whispers a threat against you or the child you carry, will answer directly to my guns.”
Clara stared at him, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. The sheer boldness, the staggering arrogance of his declaration left her utterly speechless. He wasn't hiding her away like a shameful secret. He was stepping out into the light, placing himself between her and the entire world.
“Why, Vincent?” she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. “Why go this far for me?”
Vincent released her hands, raising his fingers to gently trace the soft outline of her jaw. His thumb brushed over her bottom lip, his gaze dropping to her mouth before rising back to her eyes.
“Because for four years, Clara,” Vincent confessed, his voice dropping into a thick, raw whisper, “I watched you stand by my side in silence. I watched you be brilliant, loyal, and breathtaking, while I pretended I was strong enough to keep my hands off you. I let another man take you because I thought I was too dangerous for a woman like you.”
He leaned in, his lips hovering an inch from hers.
“I am done letting other men touch what is mine,” Vincent murmured. “And I am done pretending I don't love you.”
Clara gasped, a tear slipping down her cheek as his words shattered the final wall around her heart. Before she could process the sheer joy flooding her soul, Vincent closed the small distance between them and pressed his lips to hers.
The kiss was deep, possessive, and slow—a sudden, beautiful explosion of four years of suppressed desire, hidden glances, and unspoken devotion. Clara let out a soft sigh into his mouth, wrapping her arms around his neck, pulling him closer as she surrendered completely to the storm of his love.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against hers, both of them were breathless.
“Now,” Vincent smiled, his dark eyes filled with a fierce, brilliant light. “Let us go pick out a dress for tomorrow night.”
