Chapter 6 - The Trap is Set

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a shimmering sea of crystal chandeliers, gold leaf trim, and black-tie elegance. Over five hundred of the city’s most powerful figures—senators, district attorneys, corporate titans, and undercover mob bosses—mingled over vintage champagne and orchestra music.

At 8:30 PM, the grand double doors at the entrance of the ballroom were opened by security staff.

The whispers in the room died down instantly as Vincent Moretti walked inside.

He carried himself with the absolute, terrifying authority of a monarch walking into his court. But what caused sharp gasps to ripple through the elite crowd was the woman on his arm.

Clara Hayes moved beside him with flawless, breathtaking grace. Her head was held high, her emerald dress catching the light of the chandeliers, the Moretti diamond necklace blazing like a fire against her pale skin.

Vincent’s hand was wrapped firmly over hers where it rested on his forearm, his gaze sweeping over the crowd with a fierce, lethal warning that silenced every potential insult before it could be uttered.

Across the room, Marco Falcone dropped his cigar into a crystal ash tray. His eyes widened in shock as he recognized Clara.

“What the hell is this?” Falcone muttered to his lieutenant, his face turning dark red. “That’s Reed’s girl! Why is she wearing the Moretti diamonds?!”

Before Falcone could process the sight, Vincent guided Clara directly toward the corner lounge where Falcone and three other Syndicate bosses were standing.

The crowd parted like the Red Sea as Vincent approached.

“Falcone,” Vincent acknowledged smoothly, his voice carrying clearly over the soft violin music.

Marco Falcone forced a tight, fake smile onto his face, stepping forward. “Don Moretti. A rare pleasure to see you at a public event. And... who is your lovely companion?”

Vincent tightened his grip on Clara’s hand, pulling her slightly closer to his side.

“This is Clara Hayes,” Vincent announced, his deep voice echoing across the listening crowd of elites. “My fiancee.”

A collective gasp went through the surrounding socialites!

Clara felt her heart leap into her throat, but she kept her posture perfect, offering Falcone a cool, distant smile.

Falcone’s jaw worked silently, his mind racing wildly. “Fiancee? I was under the impression Miss Hayes was your legal secretary...”

“She was,” Vincent said, his eyes narrowing into two icy points of absolute death. “Until I realized she was far too precious to remain behind a desk. From this night forward, Miss Hayes speaks with my voice. Any respect owed to me is owed to her. And any offense offered to her... will be treated as an act of war against the Moretti family.”

Vincent leaned in slightly closer to Falcone, his tone dropping into a lethal, quiet whisper that only the mob boss could hear.

“I hear you’ve been taking an interest in my shipping routes, Marco,” Vincent murmured. “I suggest you double-check your sources. Traitors have a bad habit of dying before they see their paychecks.”

Falcone’s face drained of color. He stared at Vincent, then at Clara’s calm, unyielding eyes, and realized with a sudden, horrifying clarity that Nathaniel Reed’s cover had been completely blown.

Without waiting for Falcone’s response, Vincent turned to Clara, offering her a soft, brilliant smile that transformed his harsh features.

“Shall we dance, my love?” Vincent asked gently.

“I would love to,” Clara replied softly.

Vincent led her to the center of the marble dance floor as the orchestra began a slow, sweeping waltz. He swept her into his arms, his hand resting securely on her waist, guiding her with effortless strength.

Clara looked up into his dark eyes, resting her hand on his broad shoulder as they spun beneath the glittering chandeliers.

“Fiancee?” she whispered, a breathless smile touching her lips.

“I don't make false statements in public, Clara,” Vincent smiled, pulling her closer until their chests were touched. “Unless, of course, you intend to turn down my proposal.”

May you like

Clara let out a soft, happy laugh, leaning her head against his chest as they danced before the entire, stunned city.

“I would never turn you down, Vincent,” she whispered into his jacket. “Never.”
