Chapter 3 - The Gala Dilemma

By Monday, the internal politics of the Moretti estate took a dramatic shift.

Every morning at 7:15 AM, Elena brought Adrian his breakfast tray. The ninety-second rule laid down by Claire Whitmore was completely ignored. They talked for ten, sometimes fifteen minutes—about bread recipes, about city politics, about Winston the terrier, who had made a habit of escaping his ground-floor pen to sleep on the rug in Adrian’s study.

The staff noticed.

Claire Whitmore noticed most of all.

"She’s a distraction, Mr. Moretti," Claire said smoothly, standing before Adrian’s desk during a mid-week administrative review. "Miss Brooks is untrained, lacks proper corporate decorum, and her presence in the high-security wings poses an operational risk."

Adrian didn't look up from his financial ledger. "Miss Brooks’s presence has improved efficiency in this house by twenty percent. The staff is less anxious, the food quality has doubled, and my personal schedule is running smoothly."

"She is a maid!" Claire insisted, her professional composure fracturing slightly. "She belongs in the kitchen, not in your private affairs. Furthermore, the Autumn Syndicate Charity Gala is this Saturday at the Drake Hotel. You need an appropriate escort—someone who understands our social circle, someone who can represent the Moretti name with elegance."

Adrian paused, resting his fountain pen against the blotter. He looked up at Claire with cold, analyzing eyes. "And I suppose you have a candidate in mind?"

Claire straightened her spine. "I have managed your public image for five years, Adrian. I am more than capable of standing beside you at the Drake."

"You are my estate manager, Claire," Adrian said flatly. "Nothing more. And as for my escort..."

He paused as the study door clicked open.

Elena walked in, carrying a basket of freshly laundered linens. She wore her standard uniform—a dark blue cotton dress, a white apron, and black work shoes. Her thick dark hair was tied back in a messy bun, and her cheeks were flushed warm from the laundry room steam.

She stopped short when she saw Claire. "Oh, I’m sorry. I can come back later—"

"Miss Brooks," Adrian called out, his voice smooth as silk. "Come here for a moment."

Elena walked over nervously, setting the linen basket on a side table. "Yes, Mr. Moretti?"

Adrian leaned back in his chair, his eyes trailing over her—from her full, soft lips down to the generous curve of her hips, ending at her warm, expressive eyes.

"Are you free this Saturday evening?" Adrian asked.

Elena blinked. "Saturday? I'm scheduled for dinner service downstairs until nine—"

"Cancel her shift," Adrian told Claire without taking his eyes off Elena. "Miss Brooks will be attending the Autumn Gala at the Drake Hotel as my personal guest."

Claire’s face went completely white. "Adrian! You can't be serious! She doesn't own formal wear! She doesn't know the etiquette of the Commission! Vince Falcone and every major family head will be in that ballroom!"

"Then it will be an educational evening for everyone involved," Adrian said coldly. "That will be all, Claire."

Claire stood frozen for two agonizing seconds, her hands trembling with rage, before she turned and walked out of the office, slamming the door behind her.

Elena stood rooted to the spot, her jaw practically on the floor. "Mr. Moretti... are you out of your mind?"

"Probably," Adrian said, a faint glint of humor dancing in his grey eyes. "It’s been happening quite frequently since you fell into my chair."

"I can't go to a high-society gala!" Elena said, throwing her hands up in panic. "I’m a plus-size baker from Milwaukee! My idea of dressing up is wearing shoes without flour dust on them! I don't fit into designer dresses! I don't know how to waltz! And I certainly don't know how to handle mob bosses!"

Adrian slowly stood up from his desk. He walked around the mahogany wood until he was standing directly in front of her.

He reached out, his long, warm fingers gently catching a stray lock of dark hair that had fallen near her cheek, tucking it tenderly behind her ear.

Elena’s breath caught in her throat. The heat of his skin sent a shiver straight down her spine.

"You don't need to fit into their dresses, Elena," Adrian whispered, his voice deep, velvet, and intensely sincere. "And you don't need to pretend to be someone else. You are the only real thing that has walked through those doors in nine years. Wear whatever you want. Speak however you wish. I will be beside you the entire night."

Elena looked up into his eyes, seeing the absolute sincerity and fierce protection burning within them.

Her heart thundered like a freight train.

"I don't have a dress," she whispered weakly.

May you like

Adrian smiled—a genuine, breath-taking smile that transformed his stern face into something devastatingly handsome.

"By tomorrow morning," Adrian said, "you will have fifty."
