Chapter 5 - The Drake Hotel

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sea of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and old-money elegance mixed with underworld power.
Chicago’s elite—corrupt judges, high-ranking politicians, corporate titans, and Syndicate bosses—mingled under the watchful eyes of plainclothes security guards.
At 8:30 PM, the grand double doors of the ballroom opened.
The room fell silent.
Adrian Moretti walked in. He looked regal in a tailored black velvet tuxedo. But it wasn't Adrian who captivated the room—it was the woman on his arm.
Elena Brooks walked beside him like an empress. The emerald-green gown clung to her voluptuous curves in all the right places, flowing behind her like liquid silk. Her dark hair was styled in glamorous Old Hollywood waves, and a simple diamond pendant—a Moretti family heirloom—rested against her collarbone.
She walked with her head held high, her grace and warmth contrasting sharply with the cold, artificial beauty of the high-society women in the room.
Whispers erupted across the ballroom.
"Who is she?" "Is she a European heiress?" "Look at the way he looks at her..."
Adrian kept his hand firmly on the small of Elena’s back, guiding her through the crowd. Every few steps, he leaned down to whisper in her ear, pointing out powerful figures with lighthearted, sarcastic remarks that made her giggle naturally.
Her laugh echoed through the room—rich, genuine, and infectious.
Sitting at a corner VIP table was Vince Falcone.
Falcone was a heavy-set man in his late sixties, with greasy gray hair, cold yellowed eyes, and a reputation for extreme violence. Beside him sat two of his top enforcers.
Falcone sneered as Adrian and Elena approached his table.
"Adrian," Falcone drawled, taking a slow sip of his bourbon. "I heard you were bringing a guest. I expected a high-class escort, not a fat little peasant girl."
The air around the table turned to liquid ice.
Nathan Cole, standing behind Adrian, reached his hand subtly toward his coat lining.
Elena felt Adrian’s body tense, his muscles turning to steel. His eyes darkened into a shade of black that promised murder.
Before Adrian could speak, Elena took a step forward, resting her hand gently on Adrian’s arm to hold him back.
She looked down at Vince Falcone with a cool, pleasant smile that didn't reach her eyes.
"Mr. Falcone, isn't it?" Elena asked warmly.
Falcone grunted. "Yeah. What of it?"
"I couldn't help but notice you're drinking Old Forester 1920," Elena said smoothly. "A fine bourbon. But given your elevated blood pressure, the flushed capillaries on your nose, and the clear signs of sodium retention in your ankles, combining high-proof alcohol with the salty caviar on your plate is a bold choice. My father had the exact same complexion before his stroke."
A shockwave of stunned silence hit the table.
One of Falcone’s enforcers bit his lip to stop from laughing.
Falcone’s face flushed bright red. "What the hell did you just say to me?!"
"I’m just saying," Elena said with a sweet, innocent smile, "if you plan on taking over transport routes through the West Side, you might want to survive the appetizer course first. Good evening, Mr. Falcone."
She turned gracefully, tucking her arm back through Adrian’s.
As they walked away toward the dance floor, Adrian let out a low, deep chuckle—a sound so full of pride and amusement that it drew gazes from three different tables.
"You," Adrian whispered, pulling her close onto the dance floor as the orchestra began to play a slow waltz, "are an absolute menace."
"He was rude," Elena said simply, resting her hand on his broad shoulder as they began to step in time with the music. "And I don't like people being rude to the man who bought me this dress."
Adrian’s hand tightened on her waist, pulling her plush hips flush against his body. He looked down into her eyes with an intensity that made her universe shrink down to just the two of them.

"Elena," he murmured, his voice rich with emotion. "Dance with me."
They glided across the floor. For three minutes, the Syndicate, the threats, the blood, and the past vanished. There was only the rhythm of the music, the scent of emerald silk, and the undeniable, consuming love blooming between a mob boss and his maid.
