Chapter 7 - The Trap

Thirty minutes later, the heavy iron doors of the meatpacking warehouse blew inward with a deafening EXPLOSION.
Smoke, concrete dust, and shattered metal filled the air.
Before the dust could settle, automatic gunfire shattered the darkness.
"COVER!" Falcone screamed, dropping behind a concrete pillar.
Adrian Moretti strode through the smoke like an unleashed demon.
He wasn't wearing his suit jacket anymore. His white shirt was rolled up, his Syndicate tattoos bared, a heavy assault rifle pressed against his shoulder. Behind him, Nathan Cole and twenty elite Moretti soldiers swept through the warehouse with military precision, eliminating Falcone’s guards one by one.
Adrian didn't check for cover. He didn't slow down.
His eyes were locked onto the center of the room, where Elena was tied to a wooden chair under the lightbulb, a dark bruise swelling on her cheek.
"ADRIAN!" Elena screamed. "SNIPER ON THE RAFTERS!"
Adrian rolled to his left just as a high-caliber sniper round punched a hole into the concrete floor where he had stood a second before.
Without missing a beat, Adrian raised his rifle, aimed directly at the shadows of the roof trusses, and pulled the trigger. A burst of three rounds echoed through the rafters. A heavy body plummeted forty feet, crashing onto the wooden pallets below.
"Clear!" Nathan shouted, his team securing the perimeter.
Falcone’s remaining men threw down their weapons, hands raised in surrender.
Claire Whitmore tried to scramble toward the back fire exit, but Nathan caught her by the collar, dragging her back into the light and throwing her onto the floor.
Adrian dropped his rifle. He ran toward Elena, his hands trembling as he pulled a combat knife from his belt and sliced through the ropes binding her wrists and ankles.
The moment the ropes fell away, Elena threw her arms around his neck, burying her face into his chest.
"You came..." she sobbed, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes.
Adrian pulled her tight against his body, pressing his face into her hair, his entire frame shaking with raw, terrified emotion.
"I will always come for you," Adrian whispered, his voice cracking. "I’m sorry... God, Elena, I’m so sorry..."
He pulled back, his large hands gently framing her face. His thumb touched the dark bruise on her cheek, his eyes darkening into pure, terrifying rage.
"Who hit you?" Adrian asked, his voice dropping into an ice-cold whisper.
Elena didn't answer. She looked over at the floor near the table.
Claire Whitmore lay on her knees, sobbing hysterical tears, her pristine suit covered in dirt.
Adrian stood up slowly. He turned toward Claire, his hand reaching for the handgun holstered at his waist.
"Adrian, no!" Elena called out, reaching for his arm.
Adrian stopped, his hand resting on the grip of his gun. He looked down at Claire with utter disgust.
"You betrayed this family, Claire," Adrian said softly. "You gave Falcone our routes. You gave him access to this house. You hit the woman I love."
Claire looked up, her face pale, her eyes wild with fear. "Adrian... please! I did it for us! She’s a nobody! She was ruining everything we built!"
"There is no 'us'," Adrian said coldly. "There never was."
He turned to Nathan. "Call the federal prosecutor. Hand over all the encrypted ledgers from Claire’s personal laptop. Give them Falcone’s offshore accounts, his narcotics distribution lists, and his wiretap logs. Let the federal court bury them both in a supermax prison for the rest of their lives."

Falcone cursed loudly as federal agents—who had been monitoring Adrian’s radio feed—swept into the warehouse to handcuff the disgraced boss and Claire.
Claire shrieked as she was dragged past Elena, realizing that her life of luxury and power was officially over.
