Chapter 10 - The Garden in Bloom

Forty-eight hours later, the sun rose over a clean, transformed New York.
The federal charges against Gabriel Moretti were formally dismissed with prejudice by a federal judge following the submission of the physical evidence and the arrest of Victoria Moretti and her co-conspirators for corporate espionage and obstruction of justice.
The Falcone family, exposed and stripped of their leverage, backed off the shipping terminal negotiations completely.
At 4:00 PM on a gorgeous late summer afternoon, a fleet of black sedans pulled into the Moretti estate courtyard.
Gabriel stepped out of his car.
He looked tired, but his head was high, his charcoal suit immaculate. He walked through the grand front doors, stepping into the high-arched entry hall.
The house was not quiet.
The sound of children’s laughter echoed down the marble hallway.
Gabriel walked toward the garden terrace.
The heavy glass doors were open to the warm afternoon breeze.
Out on the green lawn, two-year-old Lily was running.
She wasn't using a cane. She wasn't holding a silk scarf.
She was running on her own two feet—unevenly, awkwardly, her right leg trailing slightly behind her left—chasing the little brown puppy across the grass, her chestnut hair flying in the wind, her musical laughter filling the warm air.
Sophia was right beside her, shouting orders to the puppy, while Marco sat on a lawn chair nearby, smiling broadly.
Standing near the rosebushes, wearing a simple white sunburst dress that showed the soft, gorgeous curves of her waist and hips, was Emma. Her blonde hair was down, blowing softly in the autumn breeze, her face glowing in the golden sunlight.
Gabriel stopped at the edge of the terrace.
He didn't look at his kingdom. He didn't look at his mansion. He looked at the woman who had saved his family.
Emma turned around. She saw him standing there.
She didn't wait. She didn't act like a servant.
She ran across the green lawn toward him, her white dress fluttering around her ankles.
Gabriel stepped down from the terrace, meeting her halfway across the grass.
He caught her in his broad arms, lifting her off her feet, swinging her around in a wide circle while holding her tightly against his chest.
"Emma," Gabriel growled into her hair, his voice choked with emotions he no longer tried to hide. "My Emma."
Emma wrapped her arms around his broad neck, kissing his cheek, his jaw, and finally resting her lips against his in a deep, passionate kiss that tasted of sweet summer air and absolute freedom.
"Daddy! Emma!"
Two tiny voices shouted from the grass.
Gabriel set Emma down gently, keeping his arm firmly wrapped around her waist, pulling her flush against his side.
Lily and Sophia ran up to them. Lily reached them first, throwing her small arms around Gabriel's knee, while Sophia grabbed Emma’s dress.
Gabriel dropped to one knee, pulling both of his daughters and Emma into a single, tight, unbreakable embrace on the sunlit grass.
"Look at me, Daddy!" Lily squealed proudly, standing on her weak leg and kicking her little left foot high in the air. "I ran all the way from the trees!"
"I saw you, my brave girl," Gabriel choked out, kissing Lily’s forehead, then Sophia’s, before looking up into Emma’s warm brown eyes.
"No more secrets, Emma," Gabriel declared softly, reaching into his suit pocket and pulling out a small velvet box.
Emma’s breath hitched in her throat. "Gabriel... what is that?"
Gabriel opened the box. Inside sat a magnificent, flawless emerald ring surrounded by brilliant white diamonds—a ring fit for a queen.
"This house was cold because it was built on fear," Gabriel said, taking her soft, capable hand in his large palm. "You turned it into a home. You protected my daughters, you fought for my honor, and you gave me back my life."
He slid the ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly.
"You are not the maid of this house, Emma Brooks," Gabriel declared, his dark eyes shining with a deep, eternal devotion. "You are the mistress of this estate. You are my wife. And you are the mother my daughters deserve."
Emma looked down at the glittering ring, then at the two little girls smiling up at her with boundless love, and finally into the eyes of the powerful, terrifying man who had knelt before her on the grass.
Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled over her lashes.

"Yes," Emma whispered, throwing her arms around his neck once more. "Yes, Gabriel! A thousand times yes!"
Behind them, on the high stone wall of the estate, the surveillance cameras clicked silently in the breeze—no longer recording fear, no longer watching for threats, but capturing the forever-blooming garden of a family that love had finally made whole.
