Chapter 2 - The Intruder in the Kitchen

The peace of the Moretti estate was an illusion built on steel, money, and men with handguns under their tailored coats. Gabriel knew this, which was why he kept his personal life completely separated from the brutal logistics of his business.

But the Moretti family was large, old, and full of teeth.

On Tuesday afternoon, while Gabriel was locked in a high-stakes negotiation with the maritime union at the Brooklyn docks, a heavy black sedan pulled through the iron gates of the estate without prior notice.

Emma was in the main kitchen, stirring a pot of organic chicken broth for the girls’ dinner, when the heavy oak service doors swung open with a bang.

A woman walked in, surrounded by the sharp, suffocating scent of expensive rose perfume and mink fur.

It was Victoria Moretti—Gabriel’s late wife’s older sister. She was a tall, sharp-featured woman in her late forty's, dressed in immaculate ivory silk, her eyes constantly scanning every room for flaws to report to the rest of the extended family clan. Behind her walked two security guards who belonged to the family's outer ring—men Gabriel tolerated but never fully trusted.

"Where are my nieces?" Victoria demanded, her voice cutting through the quiet kitchen like a whip. She didn't look at Emma; she looked at the copper pots hanging above the island. "The front gates were left open for thirty seconds. This staff is entirely incompetent."

Emma wiped her hands on a clean kitchen towel and stepped around the marble counter. She kept her posture calm, her feet planted firmly on the floor.

"Good afternoon, Mrs. Moretti," Emma said, her tone polite but entirely devoid of subservience. "The girls are resting in the nursery upstairs. It is currently quiet time."

Victoria stopped, turning her sharp gaze onto Emma. She looked Emma up and down—taking in her plain maid's uniform, her practical shoes, and her full, soft figure—with an expression of faint disgust.

"And who are you?" Victoria asked coldly. "The new cook?"

"I am Emma Brooks. I was hired by Mr. Moretti as the household assistant."

"A maid," Victoria corrected sharply, stepping closer. "You're a maid. And you don't tell me when I can or cannot see my sister's children. Move aside."

Victoria made a move toward the servant staircase that led directly to the nursery wing.

Emma took two steps to her right. It was a simple, fluid movement, but it placed her broad, comfortable body directly between Victoria and the staircase door.

"Mr. Moretti gave explicit instructions," Emma said softly, her brown eyes unwavering. "No visitors between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Lily’s therapy routine requires undisturbed rest. I am sure you understand, Mrs. Moretti."

Victoria’s face flushed red. "How dare you! You insolent little peasant! Do you have any idea who I am? I am a Moretti by blood and marriage! My late sister gave birth to those children! You are a temporary servant paid to scrub toilets!"

Victoria raised her hand, pointing a sharp, manicured red fingernail inches from Emma’s nose. "Get out of my way before I have my men drag you into the courtyard and throw you into the street!"

The two guards behind Victoria shifted their weight, their hands moving instinctively toward the lapels of their jackets.

Emma didn't flinch. She didn't look at the guards. She kept her eyes fixed on Victoria’s furious face.

"You can call Mr. Moretti right now," Emma said, her voice remaining as smooth and steady as deep water. "If he instructs me to open the nursery door, I will open it. Until then, the door stays locked, and the children stay asleep."

Behind the hidden mirror above the kitchen mantle, a high-resolution lens captured the entire interaction, transmitting it directly to Gabriel’s encrypted laptop in the back of his armored limousine.

Gabriel was sitting in the backseat, listening to his lawyer discuss shipping manifests, when the motion alert popped up on his phone screen.

He tapped the screen. He saw Victoria’s red, furious face. He saw the two guards step forward.

And he saw Emma Brooks—soft, gentle, quiet Emma—standing like an iron wall in front of the nursery door, refusing to budge an inch against one of the most feared women in New York high society.

"Pull over," Gabriel growled to his driver.

"Sir?" the driver asked.

"Pull the car over and get me the estate security line NOW!" Gabriel commanded, his dark eyes fixed on the screen.

On the screen, Victoria stepped directly into Emma’s personal space. "You think because Gabriel hired you, you're safe here? You're a fat, pathetic nobody taking advantage of a grieving father's desperation. I'm going up those stairs."

Victoria reached out to shove Emma out of the way.

Emma didn't hit back. She simply braced her weight—using her low center of gravity and strong, capable frame—and took the blow without moving an inch. Victoria bounced off Emma’s sturdy shoulder, staggering backward onto her high heels with a sharp gasp.

"Security!" Victoria shrieked. "Take this woman out!"

Before the two guards could step forward, the kitchen doors burst open.

Marco, Gabriel’s chief of security, walked in with four heavy-set estate guards behind him, their suit jackets unbuttoned, their eyes cold.

"Mrs. Moretti," Marco said, stepping between Victoria and Emma. "Your presence has not been authorized by Mr. Moretti today."

"Marco!" Victoria hissed. "This servant just assaulted me!"

"I have been watching the internal security feed for the last three minutes, Mrs. Moretti," Marco replied flatly, holding up his tablet. "And so has Mr. Moretti. He is on line one for you."

Marco handed the phone to Victoria.

Victoria took it with trembling, furious fingers. "Gabriel! This house is an absolute disgrace! Your new maid just put her hands on me—"

"Victoria," Gabriel’s voice came through the speaker, low, quiet, and laced with a terrifying, absolute stillness that made even the guards in the room straighten up. "If you step foot on my property again without my written permission... I will cut your late husband’s trust fund allocation to zero by five o'clock today."

Victoria froze. The color drained completely from her face. "Gabriel... she's a maid!"

"She is an employee of this house who follows my orders," Gabriel said icy tone cutting through the line like a razor. "You have thirty seconds to walk out of my gates before Marco escorts you out in handcuffs. Goodbye, Victoria."

The line went dead.

Victoria stared at the phone, then at Marco's unblinking face, and finally at Emma, who was calmly picking up her kitchen towel again as if nothing had happened.

Without another word, Victoria turned on her heel and stormed out of the kitchen, her heels clicking violently against the marble floor.

When the room was quiet again, Marco looked at Emma, a rare, faint smirk touching his scarred face.

"Nice balance, Ms. Brooks," Marco noted softly. "Lower center of gravity wins every time."

Emma picked up her wooden spoon and gave the chicken broth a small, practical stir. "She was going to wake up Lily," Emma said simply. "And Lily had a very hard morning."
