Chapter 7 - The Shadows of the Past

While the heart of the estate grew warmer, the world outside was growing increasingly cold.
The Moretti family’s long-standing rivalry with the rival Falcone syndicate had reached a critical flashpoint over the control of the new container terminals in New Jersey. Threats had been made; intelligence was gathered.
Gabriel spent eighteen hours a day in emergency meetings, his face growing leaner, his eyes darker, the terrifying persona of the "Moretti Boss" returning with full force.
One rainy Friday night, Gabriel returned home at 2:00 AM.
The house was dark and silent. He walked upstairs to the nursery wing to check on the girls, as he did every single night without exception.
He pushed the door open quietly.
The dim light of a small nightlight illuminated the room. Emma was sitting in a rocking chair between the two small beds. She had fallen asleep while holding a storybook, her head tilted back against the cushion, her mouth slightly open, her long eyelashes casting soft shadows over her cheeks.
Gabriel stood in the doorway, staring at her.
The sheer exhaustion of his war-torn life seemed to slip off his shoulders in her presence. He felt an overwhelming, terrifying urge to walk over, wrap his arms around her soft, generous body, and bury his face in her neck until the darkness in his mind cleared.
As if sensing his presence, Emma stirred.
Her hazel eyes fluttered open. She saw Gabriel standing in the doorway, drenched from the rain, his coat dripping onto the carpet, looking exhausted and impossibly lonely.
She didn't startle. She stood up quietly, placing the book on the side table, and walked out into the carpeted hallway, softly pulling the nursery door closed behind her.
"Gabriel?" she whispered, looking at his pale face. "What happened? Are you hurt?"
Gabriel looked down at his hands. They were slightly trembling—not from fear, but from the brutal tension of deciding a man's fate three hours ago in an industrial warehouse.
"No," he rasped. "I'm not hurt."
"You look like you haven't slept in three days," Emma said softly. She reached out, her hand hesitating for a fraction of a second before resting against his damp lapel. "Come into the linen parlor. I'll make you tea."
"I don't want tea, Emma," Gabriel said, his voice dropping an octave into a low, desperate growl.
He took a step forward, closing the distance between them until her back pressed against the wood paneling of the hallway wall.
Emma looked up into his dark eyes, her breath catching in her throat. She could feel the heat radiating off his body, smell the rain and cedarwood on his skin.
"Gabriel..." she whispered, her hands resting flat against his broad chest. "We can't... I am an employee in your house..."
"To hell with the employee title," Gabriel growled softly.
He reached up, his large, calloused hand cupping the side of her face, his thumb gently smoothing over her cheekbone.
"I have spent six months watching you on those damn cameras, Emma," Gabriel confessed, his voice thick with a raw, agonizing honesty. "I watched you bring my daughter back to life. I watched you stand up to my family. I watched you bleed for a stray dog in my garden. I haven't thought about my business, my money, or my power for a single hour without thinking of you first."
Emma’s heart slammed violently against her ribs. Tears pricked her eyes. "Gabriel... I am just a maid. I have no family, no fortune, no place in your world..."
"You are everything my world lacks," Gabriel interrupted fiercely. "You are warmth. You are life. You are the only reason this cold house feels like a home."
He leaned down, his forehead resting against hers.
"Tell me to stop, Emma," he murmured against her lips. "Tell me right now, and I will walk away and never touch you again. But if you don't..."
Emma didn't tell him to stop.
She slid her hands up his broad chest, over his rain-dampened shoulders, and cupped the back of his neck, pulling him down to her.
Their lips met in a deep, desperate, overwhelming kiss that shattered every barrier between them.
Gabriel let out a low groan, his arms wrapping around her waist, pulling her plush, soft body flush against his hard frame. He kissed her with a fierce, ravenous tenderness—claiming her mouth, her breath, her very soul—while Emma clung to him, opening herself completely to the powerful, dangerous man who had surrendered his heart to her.

When they finally broke apart, both breathing heavily, Gabriel kept his forehead pressed to hers, his hands resting firmly on her hips.
"You are mine now, Emma," Gabriel whispered, his eyes blazing with a dark, permanent resolve. "No more hiding. No more maid's apron. You belong at my side."
