Chapter 3 - The Extraction

Gregor’s men moved forward instantly, their fingers fumbling with the heavy steel padlocks securing Elena’s wrists to the arms of the chair. The heavy chains fell to the floor with a dull, ringing clatter. The moment her arms were free, her strength failed her, her body tilting sideways as the circulation returned to her bruised flesh in a wave of burning pain.
Before she could hit the concrete, Luca caught her. He lifted her into his arms effortlessly, pulling her small frame tightly against his chest. The familiar scent of woodsmoke, expensive leather, and rain enveloped her, a stark contrast to the foul, metallic smell of the warehouse.
"Luca," Gregor stepped forward again, his voice tight with desperation. "You can't just take her. The council's security team is stationed at the main gate. If they see you leaving with the auditor, it will be viewed as open treason against your father."
Luca stopped at the threshold of the warehouse door, not turning around. "Tell my father that if he wants to discuss the auditor, he knows where to find me. And Gregor? If I find out you or your men ever touch her again, I won't just take your territory. I will bury you under it."
He marched out of the building and into the freezing, rain-slick night. The warehouse was located in a desolate, industrial stretch of the Boston harbor, surrounded by rusted shipping containers and the dark, churning waters of the Atlantic. A sleek, black armored SUV sat idling near the pier, its headlights cutting through the heavy fog.
The front door opened, and a tall, stoic man named Marco—Luca’s personal driver and most trusted lieutenant—stepped out, his hand resting casually near his unbuttoned coat where a shoulder holster was visible. He took one look at Elena’s pale face and the blood on her lip, and his expression turned grim.
"Get the heater on, Marco," Luca ordered, sliding into the spacious leather backseat while keeping Elena cradled in his lap. "And call Dr. Evans. Have him meet us at the safehouse in Brookline."
"Right away, boss," Marco said, slamming the door and shifting the massive vehicle into drive. The SUV roared to life, its tires gripping the wet gravel as it sped away from the docks, leaving the grim silhouettes of Gregor and his men far behind in the darkness.
Inside the car, the warmth from the climate control system began to wash over Elena, chasing away the deep, bone-chilling cold that had paralyzed her mind. She rested her forehead against Luca’s shoulder, her fingers clutching the fine wool of his lapel as if she were a drowning person holding onto a life raft.

"Why didn't you tell me?" she whispered, her eyes closed as the steady vibration of the car offered a strange comfort. "Why didn't you tell me who you really were?"
Luca rested his chin against the top of her dark hair, his arms holding her so tightly she could feel the frantic, heavy beat of his heart. "Because I thought that if I stayed away, the shadow wouldn't touch you, Elena. I thought that if I became a ghost in your memory, you would stay safe in your quiet world of numbers. I was wrong. The shadow was already looking for you because of the audit. I brought you into the light, and tonight, I almost lost you."
