Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

The truce lasted for exactly three weeks. During those twenty-one days, the safehouse in Brookline became a strange, beautiful pocket of peace in the middle of a war zone. Elena’s physical injuries healed completely, her strength returning as she spent her afternoons walking through the walled garden with Luca, who seemed to shed his ruthless mafia persona the moment he crossed the threshold of the property.

They talked about everything—the mornings they had shared before the truth came out, the books they loved, the future they had both stopped believing in. For a brief moment, Elena could almost forget that the men guarding the driveway were carrying automatic weapons, and that her name was still written in red on a file folder in Beacon Hill.

But the peace was shattered on a cold Tuesday morning.

Elena was in the kitchen, brewing a fresh pot of coffee, when the heavy glass windows of the conservatory shattered with a deafening CRASH. The high-pitched wail of the estate’s security alarm tore through the quiet house, accompanied by the rapid, rhythmic thwip-thwip-thwip of suppressed firearms outside.

"Elena! Down!" Marco’s voice roared from the hallway as he burst into the kitchen, his weapon drawn, his face tense with a soldier's focus. He grabbed her by the shoulder, pulling her flat against the marble floor just as a hail of bullets tore through the upper cabinets, scattering shards of porcelain and glass across the room.

"Who is it?!" Elena shrieked, her hands over her ears as the noise of the firefight intensified in the courtyard.

"Gregor’s faction," Marco hissed, firing three rounds through the doorway into the smoke-filled hall. "The old man is dying, Elena. Nikolai had a stroke last night, and the council is fractured. Gregor made a move to seize the throne, and he knows that as long as you have those financial files, he can't rule without Luca’s permission. They came to eliminate the evidence."

The heavy oak front door was blown off its hinges with a concussive blast that shook the entire house. Elena could hear the heavy boots of multiple men entering the foyer, their shouting voices filled with a feral, lawless energy. Marco was hit in the shoulder, a crimson stain spreading across his gray shirt as he fell back against the kitchen island, his weapon slipping from his fingers.

Elena looked at the gun on the floor, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She was a forensic auditor; her hands were meant for calculators and spreadsheets, not cold steel. But as she heard the footsteps approaching the kitchen door, she reached out, her fingers wrapping around the heavy, checkered grip of the automatic pistol.

Before she could raise it, a massive figure stepped into the kitchen entryway, his weapon leveled at her chest. It was Gregor’s chief enforcer, a brutal man named Viktor. He looked at Elena with a cruel, cold smile.

"End of the line, lady," Viktor sneered, his finger tightening on the trigger.

A single, thunderous shot echoed through the shattered window behind him. Viktor froze, his eyes widening in shock as a clean, dark hole appeared in the center of his forehead. He collapsed forward like a felled tree, revealing Luca standing on the veranda outside, a smoking tactical rifle held firmly against his shoulder, his eyes burning with a terrifying, demonic fury.
